Letters Patent No. 95,561, dated October 5, 1869.
BGPROVEDENT IN COMBINED STRAW-CUTTER AND FEED-BOX.
Ths Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the lame- To albwhonrt may concern Be it known that I, Jesse IBURGEss, of Richmond,A
in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined Straw-Cutter and Feed-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
The first part of my invention relates to a novel mannerof construct-ing the knife of a straw-cutter, which is so formed and attached, that by simply pressing it downward, a combined horizontal and vertical motion is imparted to the edge, producing a drawingcut, and' giving 'great eiciency to the stroke'.
The second part of my invention relates to the construction of a combined straw-cutter and feed-box, as will be hereinafter described.
Inthe accompanying drawings- Figure 1 isa perspective view of my combined straw-cutter and feed-box, and
-Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A Similar vletters in the dierent figures refer to corresponding parts The cutter-box A rests upon the feed-box B, to which .it is secured by means of the hinges t t', in such a manner that it may be partially revolved, as shown by dotted lines in iig. 2.
The knife C is provided with an arm, c, that extends upward, (the blade of the knife being in a horizontal position', with the edge downward, as shown in the drawings,) and is secured by a bolt, e, to the post D.
In operation, the knife is raised with the hand, by grasping the handle G, and is pressed downward, through the .straw to be cut. Meanwhile, each point of the blade passes through an arc of a circle, having a radius equalV to the distance from that point to the bolt e, by reason of which, andthe peculiar form of the knife, a drawing-motion of the' edge is produced, giving great eiijciency to the stroke.
It is necessary that the arm c should he about equal in length to the cutting-edge of the knife, iu order that the blade may have the proper amount of draw or 'horizontal motion, while the velt-ical motion is through an arc that may be conveniently traversed by the hand of the operator.
The feed-box B may be constructed of any suitable dimensions, and s-provided with a cross-piece, F, that supports one end of the cutter-box, and also serves to protect the edge of the knife while mixing the feed.
It is claimed that great convenience will result from combining the straw-cutter and feed-box, as here shown, the feed-box being raised to a convenient` height for mixing the feed, and the whole heilig more compact and simple than when separate and distinct, as usually constructed.
Having thus fully described my said invention,
NVhat I'claim, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Pats ent, is
1. The knife C, having an arm, c, extending in a direction at right angles to the blade, when said arm is about equal in length to the cutting-edge of the blade, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Theic-ombination of the cutter-box A, feed-box B, and knife O, when constructed and op'erated'sul stantially as herein shown and described.
JESSE BURGESS.
