Description

DANIEL SNOW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No.v 87,008, dated Fehr/amy 16,1869.
v/IPRGVEMENT IN'l RECESS-C''TTER FOR SETTING- EINGES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent'and making part of the zama.
To all whom tt ma/y conce/m.-
Beit known that I, DANIEL SNOW, of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Recess-Cutter for Setting Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a side View. s
Figure 2 is a view of the under side.
Figure 3 is a vertical section.v
The nature of this invention relates to the construction and arrangement of two chisels, Working at right angles to each other, in such amanner as to out a re-4 cess to correspond with a scroll-shaped but 'or hinge, one chisel being scroll-shaped, and Working perpendicular-ly, cutting the back side of a recess to the hinge, and the other working horizontally, and having its end formed to correspond with its mate, cutting and removing the wood smoothly for the. reception of a scroll or fancy-shaped hinge.
This machine consists of the frame A, which can be made in any desirable form, suitable for the purpose,
and in and to which frame are secured the chisels and levers hereafter referred to.
B represents a chisel, placed in an upright position in the frame, being made to move up and down between the guides a al.
The lower end' of this chisel may be made either straight, as those now used, or scroll-shaped, as shown, the hinge being made to correspond so as to fit into the recess cut by said chisel.
Placed at right angles to this chisel, is one, C, which slides on the bed A of the frame, between the Ways or l guides b.
These chisels may be operated by any means desired, the lower one, O, being operated by the' lever D, which is secured in an opening in said chisel, and by means of which-the chisel is moved backward and forward in cutting the recess.
On the part B' of the iame, against which the chisel B moves, is placed the spring E, to raise the chisel after it has cut the back of the recess.
F is a slot oueach side of the frame, by means of which slots the cutter is placed on the article in which the recess is to be cut, and which can be diminished in size according to the thickness of the article on which the cutter is placed, and the depth of the recess required by plates c c, indicated by the dotted lines, iig. l, the plates being adjusted by means of screws and slots.
G is alever and cam, which holds the cutter in place while the recess is being out.
After the frame is secured, the chisel B is then forced down, cutting the back of the recess, and the chisel C then cuts the remainder of the recess, the end of said chisel corresponding in shape to the chisel B.
Bythis means, the one chisel Working in a perpendiculanand the other in ahorizontal position, the recess is made smooth and even for the reception of the hinge, which must correspond inform to the recess cut.
' The scroll of these chisels can be varied as may be desired. I l
It is also designed to change the arrangement of the cutter so that a recess can be cut on the side as well as,
ou the edge of a board or article in which the hinge is to be secured. l
I claim the scroll-shaped hisels B and C, the frame A, spring E, lever D, and cam G, constructed and arrangedas described, for the purpose set forth.
DANIEL snow.
