ATTACHMENT FOR GRINDING THREAD-TOOL BITS.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, AUGUST H. LENZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in At tachments for Grinding Thread-Tool Bits, of Which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates toan attachment for grinding thread tool bits and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient means for adjustably holding the tool bit in engagement with a grindin medium.
Another object of this inventlon is the production of a simple and eflicient means for feeding the tool bit toward the grindlng medium.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that 1 designates the base which is provided with apair of depending ears 2 which are engaged by means of a yoke 3 carried upon a supporting post 1. This supporting post 41 is adapted to fit in the place of the rest plate on the emery wheel,v frame. The base 1 is provided with beveled side edges 5 which engage the beveled track ways6 carried upon the bottom of the rack plate 7. A filler strip 8 is carried by one of the track ways 6 and constitutes a wearing plate for engaging thebase 1. Adjusting screws 9 pass through the track ways 6 and engage the plate 8 for adjusting the same relative to the base 1, and permitting this plate 8 to be adjusted to take up the wear upon the base 1.

The gage plate .19. comprises a substantially semi-circular body, having a straight front face 2 1 and .a curved rear face 25. The rear face 25 is provided with a plurality of gage notches 26 formedin-the rear therea of, as shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings. These notches 26 are arranged upon of a screw 28 and this clamp 27 is provided V with a stationary projecting jaw 29. A sliding adjustable jaw30 is carried by the clamp 27 and this adjustable jaw 30 carries a plurality of overhanging plates 31 which plates overhang the clamp 27 as. shown in Fig. 4 for holding the adjustable jaw 30 against accidental displacement. A socket plate 32 is carried by-the adjustable jaw 30 and receives a lower threaded end of the adjusting screw 33, which is carried by'the overhanging plate 34. An operating knob 35 is carried by the upper end of the threaded pin 33 as shown clearly in Fig. 3 for the purpose of permitting the adjustment of the adjustable jaw 30 upon the clamp 27.
The vertically extending portion of the clamp 27 is reinforced by means of a bracing web 36 as shown in Fig. 4:.
A latch 37 is pivotally mounted within a socket 38 carried by the rear of the clamp, the socket 38 being formed in a housing 39 carried by the clamp 27. A coil spring 40 is secured to the clamp 27 and engages the lower end Of the latch 37 and normally holds the lower end of the latch 37 within one of the notches 26 formed in the gage plate 19.
The principal object of the present invention is to produce an efficient means for grinding a thread tool bit for cutting a 29, 60 and square threads. Further it should be understood that the bit may be ground to a number of different degrees if so desired, owing to the adjustments which are made possible, by the present invention. By means of the present device, a workman will be enabled to efiiciently grind a tool bit at a proper angle without regard to the grinding surface of the emery wheel, in View of the fact that the tool bit may be held in a proper position for permitting the emery wheel to grind the point of the bit at a desired angle.
It is deslrous to have the latch 37 operate with the least amount of friction and for this reason the latch 37 is pivotally mounted between the cone shaped ends 37, of the adj usting screws or supporting screws.
The operation of the device is as follows:
A tool bit 4L1 is clamped between the adjustable jaw 30 and the stationary jaw 29 and the bit is swung to the desired position by adjustin the clamp 36, upon the gage plate 19 and permitting the latch 37 to engage the desired notch 26. The tool bit 41 may be moved across the face of the emery wheel or grinding medium by operating the crank 13, thereby rotating the operating pinion 11. In this way the rack plate 7 will be shifted upon the base 1, for the purpose of moving the tool ll in the desired direction. The gage plate 19 may be shifted transversely across the rack plate 7 by means of the adjusting screw or pin 21, thereby moving the tool bit 41 into or out of engagement with the grinding medium.
It should be of course understood that certain obvious detail mechanical changes may be made in the present device without departing from the spirit of the inventlon, so long as these changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting means, a tool engaging clamp pivotally mounted upon said supporting means and comprislng a vert cally extending body, a sliding jaw whlch 1s substantially 'U-shaped in top plan engaging the front and side surfaces of said body,
' plates fixed upon said j aw and engaging the of said body, a screw passing through the overhanging plate and engaging said sliding jaw, whereby the sliding jaw may be ad justed with respect to the fixed jaw.
' 2.. In a device of the class described, the combination of a supporting means, said supporting means including a gage plate having notches in one periphery, an elongated fixed jaw pivotally mounted upon said gage plate, a body extending vertically from said aw, a sliding jaw movable upon said body, a reinforcin web carried by said body and formed on saic fixed jaw for reinforcing the body, a vertically extending housing formed on the rear end of said fixed jaw, said housing having a vertical socket therein, a latch pivotally mounted within said socket and extending from said socket adjacent the upper end thereof, coiled springs connected to said housing within the socket at the lower portion thereof and also connected to said latch, thus holding said latch within a selected socket for holding said fixed jaw in a set position upon said gage plate although the latch may be swung by movement of its upper end into said socket to move the lower end thereof from a notch thus permitting the fixed jaw to be swung upon a gage plate whereupon the latch may be released to again fit within another selected notch.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a rack plate means for adjustably supporting said rack plate, a track plate fixed upon said rack plate and extending transversely thereof, said track plate being centrally channeled a socket plate secured within the channel of the track plate, a gage plate having trackways thereon engaging said track plate, thus slidably mounting the gageplate upon said track plate, said gage plate having a depending ear in alinement with said socket plate, a screw passing through said ear and into the socket plate, whereby said gage plate may be moved longitudinally of said track plate by the movement of the screw within the socket plate, an implement retaining means mounted upon said gage plate.
