IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-TURIG LATHES.

TO ALL PERSONS TO WIIOM THESE PRESENTS AMAY COME:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL U. KING, of Windsor, of tbe county ot' Windsor, and State of Vermont, have made a new or improved Machine for Itounding` Crooked or Tapered Sticks; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying draw.ings,of which- Figure l'denotes a front view, and l Figure 2 a rear view of it.
Figures 3 and 4 are transverse sections of it, takenin planes at right angles with each other and Athrough the axis of the machine. l
In such drawings, A denotes a wheel provided with two tubular journals, B C, fastened to and projecting from opposite sides of the body of such wheel..
Within a groove extending diametrically across thel wheel'are two slides, D D, `which I term centralizers', they being arranged on opposite sides ofthe'axis of the wheel.'
Four curved levers, E E E E, are arranged against onel s ide of the wheel, in manner as represented in iig.,
l, they being secured to the wheel by screws aa an, which go through them', and' screw into the wheel and constitute fulcra for the levers.' A Apair of theseleve'rsis'pivetedjto each ofthe centralizers, D D. The longer arms of both pair of 'the levers extendthrongh twoii'fcights, IF F,nrranged to slide freely in guides or a groove disposed at right angles with the grooves in'uwhich the eentralizcrs are placed.
Another pair of centralizers, G G, with levers I-I II and weights II, corresponding with the hercinbeforementioned eentralizers, levers, and weights, is siniilarlyappliedto opposite sides=of the wheel, and so thatthe second pair of centralizcrs may stand nt right angles with the first.
To the outer sides of the ccntraliz'ers GG, turning-cutters K K are affixed, each being made to project a little distance beyond the inner ond ofthe centrali'zer to which it is attached. i
Figurc' is a side view, and
Figurel 6 an edgcview of one of the said centralizers and its cutter. v l
One cutter will be suliicient for the machine, but I prefer two of such cutters, thatl is, one to each of the pairs, as in that case the' cutting or rounding of tbe stick will be done to better advantage.'
The machine so made is to be supported in bo:\'es,'applied to its journals, the whole being so as to enable a wheel to be put in revolution by a driving-belt applied 4to the periphery thereof.
When' the machine is in revolution, the slideweights, by the action of centrifugal force, will be thrown outward from the axis of the wheel, and consequently, by acting on.the longer arms of the ',levers, lwill turn such levers, and force the' centralizcrs inward toward the centre or axis of thewheel, and so as to lkeep them in contact with any article which may extend-between them.
Thus, when a stick is forced between the inner ends of the four centralizers, they will -centi-alize it with reference to the cutters, which, as the stick may be pushed longitudinally forward, will round it, no matter how crooked or tapering tho'stick-may be, so long as it can be forced through the hores of the journals ofthe wheel. While the eentralizers centralize the stick with respect to the cutters, they will be kept iirmlyup to it by the action of the weights and the levers. i l
This machine has been found to be of great service in rounding scythosnath blanks and various other sticks.
The machine may be constructed with three centralizers, provided with one or more cutters,- and with weights and levers to operate the centralizers in manner as described, in which case the centralizers are to stand at angles of one hundred and twenty degrees, instead of at angles ot ninety degrees with eachother.
What I claiui'as my invention is I The combination of the centralizers, their levers and centrifugal weights, with one or more cutters, and a wheel having tubular journals, or tlie-equivalents thereof, the whole being arranged substantially in manner and so as to operate as and for 'the purpose hereibefore described.
SAMUEL U. KING.
