Description
uitrit 'tatrs atrat ffft JAMES T. FORSYTH, OF WHEELINGQWEST VIRGINIA.
Leffe-rs Patent No. 82,613, dated september 29, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN MAGHINES FOR DRESSING BARREL-HODPS.,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES-T. FORSYIrI, of the city of Wheeling, county of Ohio, in the State of West Virginie, have invented Aa new and useful Machine for Dressing Barrel and other Hoops from split timber; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a front-elevation, and Y Figure 2 is a transverse section.
Like letters represent like parts.
rlhe nature of my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the different parts of a circular revolving bed-piece, working inside of a stationary concentric ark in such a manner that `it will automatically catch the end of the piece of stuif to be dressed, whilst the machine is in motion, and draw it under the dressingknives, so as to give it the desir'ed thickness and shape for a barrel or other hoop, and, when nished, discharge the same, thereby obviating the ditliculty of the slipping of the piece whilst beingfed tothe machine.
The object of my'invention being the formation 'and dressing of barrel and other hoops from split timber, in the drawings, fig. 1 represents a front elevation of my machine, and iig. 2 a transverse section.
, Letter A. represents the stationary concentric ark, which is secured to the frame Cv C C by the bolts Q.
Letter B represents the revolving hed-piece, which is attached to the shaft 0, it being hun-g on the frame C C C in such a manner that the bed B will revolve inside of the concentricvark A, 'motion being given by the driving-Wheels marked P.
Letter D represents a hinged catch; 'SQ .nttached'to the bed B that as the bed revolves, the catch D, coming in contact withV the enlargement, represented by the red line on the circular ark at R, it is forced down and catches the piece of wood between it and the spring F, andvthereby drawing it under the press-rolls, marke'd G, and the knife H; and as it .passes round to the end of the enlargement, represented by the red lineatS, thc catch being released, it is thrown up preparatory to taking hold ofthe next piece, and the finished .hoop is discharged at the other end of the machine.
The letter m represents an enlargement or raise on the bed B, for the purpose of giving the proper shape to the hoop. v
Letter K represents abit or knife, which is attached to the bit-stock, represented by the dotted line I, and extends down past the bed B in such a manner that it will separaterany surplus wood fromrand at the same time dress the edge of the hoop.
The press-rolls G are held down by thespringsv L, the machine to be operated by any of the usual or v well-known powers. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is- Y I The circular revolving bed B, the catch D, and the spring F, or their equivalents, substantially as described. l
2. The concentric ark A, in combination with the knives H H and K K, substantially as' described, and
` for the purpose'set forth.
JAMES T. FORSYTH.
