SPECIFICATION forming part .of Letters Patent No. 768,588, dated August 30, 1904.

Be it known that I, ABRAHAM OOHN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rats for Hair-Dressing, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive rat for use in womens hair-dressing, which can be made of celluloid, rubber, tortoise, and similar material, such as is used in making hair-combs.
In the drawings forming a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved rat. Fig. 2. is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a section onthe line 6 6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the blank used in forming the rat.
The body 1 is formed circular to conform to the head and comprises the main or longitudinal strip 2 and the circular ribs tangent thereto and a longitudinal band 4, the ribs 3 being of the greatest size in the center of the back piece 2 and gradually decreasing toward the ends.
The rat is preferably'built up from the flat blank, as shownin Fig. 7, in which a flat piece of flexible material 5, such as Celluloid, is cut with one end wider than the other and having transverse slots 6, leaving' the ribs 3 between the side portions 7 and 8. By bending the blank round and sealing (as by heating) the parts 7 and 8 together one-half of the main part of the rat is formed with the end 9 eX- tending beyond the edge of the -end of the part 7, which is united with a similar end of` the other half of the body by heating or other desired way. Between the parts 7 and 8 at the outer end is inserted the ends of a strap 4, which is united therewith by heating and is bent round at 10 and then interwoven between the tops of the ribs 3, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5, to give stability tothe rat and This strap is preferably bifurcated between the endsto form a double strap, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. An article of the class described, comprising a curved back of iiexible material, circular ribs connected with said back, said ribs decreasing in circumference from the middle or the back toward the ends, and a flexible strap connected with the ends of said back, and interwoven with the tops of the said ribs.
2. An article ofthe class described, comprising ay curved back, circular ribs tangentially connected with said back, said ribs decreasing in circumferences from the middle oi' the back toward the ends, and a strap, bifurcated between its ends, vconnected with the ends of said back, and interwoven with the tops of the said ribs.
3. An article of the class described comprising transverse ribs having longitudinal iieXible back sections secured to the ends thereof, said ribs being bent circularly and the back sections longitudinally united one upon the other and a iieXible strap connected with the ends of the back and interwoven with the tops of the ribs.
4. An article of the class described comprising transverse ribs having flexible longitudinal back sections secured to the ends thereof,
said ribs being bent circularly and the backsections longitudinally united with each other, and a flexible bandinterwoven with the tops of the ribs 'and having its ends secured to the said back.
5. An article of the class described comprisingsections formed of ribs bent circularly, longitudinal back pieces connected with the ends of the ribs, said pieces being overlappingly secured along their length, and the ABRAHANI COI-IN.
