SPECIFICA 'lION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,826, dated August 16, 190%.
Application led April 1S, 1904. Serial lo` 203,739. (No model.)
To {1,7/ 1.0700711/ 'if mfrrfll/ con cfr/1,:
lle it known thatl, Do'iiINick N Inlinons'r, a citizen ot' theUnited States oi' America7 residing at luilalo, in the count),v of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements inlffuliuttonsof which the following is such a lull, clear` and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to niake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, lorining a part hereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and eflicient fastening Jor cull and collar buttons, studs, and other articles which Will permit the ready insertion or removal of the article without soiling or injuring the linen or other material to which it is applied.
With this object in view l construct one head ofthe br ton with a tubular stein carrying a fastening device and construct the other head with a sleeve adapted to engage the tu'- bnlar stein and be engaged and held by the fastening device.
The invention therefore consists in such an arrangement ot' parts and in certain novel features of the saine as will be hereinafter lirst fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims. v
ln the drawings hereto annexed l have shown the invention applied to a link cull'- button. Y
ln the said drawings, Figure l is a side view ot the button complete with the parts locked together. the sanic. Fig. 3 is a detailview showing the parts of the button in perspective and separated7 and Fig. a is an enlarged. detail section of the end of the stein.
ln carrying out the invention l forni on-or securc'lo the head A of the button a tubular stern B, which is curved in the form illustrated. The ond el: this steni is provided with external screw-threads C, which extend to and slightly beyond the end of a longitudinal slot l) in the stein. lVithin the stein is a slidable catch E, consisting' of a pin or small rod F, disposed longitudinally within the stein. and a tooth or pawl (l, rising from said pin be- Fig. is a longitudinal section of,`
-catch against the outer end of the slot.
tween the ends thereof and projecting through the slot l). A coiled spring H is litted Within the stein between the head of the button and the catch and serves 'to normally hold the For convei'iience in assembling l prefer to torni the stein with the slot extending entirely to its cnd. The spring` and the catch may be then successively placed .in the stein, after which the end of the stein may bc closed by securing a bushing l therein. Nithin the bean or base J of thebutton l secure an internally-threaded sleeve li, having an annular llangc l; on its end, the said flange being foi-ined with a radial notch M, as shown.
The construction and a'rangeinent of the several parts beingl thus made known, the eper'ation will be readily understood. Alter the tubular stein has been inserted through the,y
buttonholes or openings in the cull or other article the bean or base is engaged over the end ot' the saine and rotated so that through the action or' the screw-threads the notched flange will be brought to and against the catch, the rcsult being that the catch will automatically engage the notch and prevent Yfurther rotation of the bean, Nhen it is desired to detach the button, the catch is disengaged by a pressure of the linger and the bean then rotated in the opposite direction to remove the saine from the stein.
lt will be observed that the notched llange serves as a stop by bearing against the outer surface of the bean-to prevent the sleeve dropping too lar into the bean, thereby preventing the end ot the sleeve niarring the bean, and that it-also avoids the necessity oi' Forniing a partei' the lock on the bean. Consequently the invention may be readily applied to buttons new in use. All the parts are inclosed, so that when the button is in use a close inspection is necessary to distinguish it from the ordinary solid-stein buttons.
lt will be noticed that one end et' the pin portion ot' the catch lits in the busting in the end ol' the tubular stein, while the other end ot' said pin enters the coiled spring. The ends oi" the pin are thus guided`v so that the catch wiil move eveniy and wabbiing of' die smile while the device is in use is avoided.
