1'0 a w/wm it may concern.-
Be it known that-I, LABAN J. EVEREST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of showcases termed all-glass show-cases and aims to set up a glass sl1o\ -case in which the glass plates forming the top, front, and sides of the case are secured together through the medium of metallic fasteners without making any apertures through the plates.
The invention further aims to construct an all-glass show-case which can be readily set up, taken apart, and packed in compact form for shipment.
The invention further aims to construct an all-glass show-case which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a show-case constructed in accordance with this Fig. 2 is a top plan View of one front corner of the show-case, showing one of the combined coupling and clamping devices for the side and front plates. Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the sections of the combined coupling and clamping device. Fig. 1 is a perspective of another of the sections of the combined coupling and clampingdevice. Fig. 5 is a like view of another of the sections of the combined coupling and clamping device. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the coupling-sections of the combined coupling and clamping device assembled. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the side plates. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the side coupling devices employed for the top and side plates. Fig.- 9 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the side plates having mounted thereon a side coupling device. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the roar coupling devices. Fig. 11 is perspective, partly broken away, of the rear of the case, showing the arrangement of one of the rear coupling devices. Fig. 12 is a perspective view of a corner fastening device for the side plates. Fig. 13 is a sectional plan of one of the rearcorners of the case, showing the arrangement of the fastening device. Fig. 1 1 is a sectional plan of one of the front corners of the case; and Fig. 15 is a perspective View of one of the lower front corners of the case, showing the fastening devices for the side and front plates at the lower corners thereof.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1 denotes the side plates, which are formed of glass, and each of said plates has its top edge at apoint removed from its forward end provided with a countersunk portion 2 and below said countersunk portion 2 provided with a pair of recesses 3; Each of the plates 1, below its top edge at a point nearer the forward end thereof than the point in which is formed the recesses 3, is provided with additional recesses 4, the purpose of which will be hereinafter referred to. Each of the plates 1 has its forward edge cut away a suitable distance, so as to form ashoulder 5 at a point removed from the top edge thereof, and the function of said shoulder 5 will be hereinafter referred to.
The combined coupling and clamping devices for the front upper corners of the case are each formed of three sections, which are designated by the reference characters A, B, and (J. The section A is termed a side-platecoupling section and is employed for coupling the side plate 1 to the front plate at the upper corner thereof. The section A is constructed of a pair of sides and a front wall, (designated by the reference characters 6, 7, and 8, respectively.) The side and front walls are formed integral with each other, and each of the side walls 6 7 is provided with anopcning 9, and the top edge of the front wall 8 is formed with a seat 10.
The section A is adapted to be mounted upon the shoulder 5 of its respective side plate and is of such height as to be flush with the top edge of the plate and so that the side walls 6 7 thereof extend parallel with the faces of the side plate.
The section B is termed a l front-plate-coupling section andis constructed of a pair. of side walls 11 12 and the end wall 13. Each of the side walls 11 12 is provided with an opening14r, and the side wall 12 at its top is formed with an outwardly-extending protuberance 15, which is adapted to engage in the seat 10, so that the section A and the section B will be coupled together. The side walls 11 and 12, wall 13, and protuberance 15 of the sectionB are formed integral with each other.
Two combined coupling and clamping devices are employed, and the sections A of the said devices are adapted to in close the forward edge at the forward upper corner of. each of the side plates, and the sections B of the said devices are adapted to inclose the side edges of the front plate at the forward upper corners thereof.
The openings 14 in the sections B are adapted to register with the recesses 17 in the front plate, so as to receive a suitable soldering or cementing medium 19, Fig. 14:, for securing the sections B to the plate 18.
The clai'nping-sections G of the combined coupling and clamping devices are each substantially L-shaped in contour and have each end thereof provided with an inwardly-ex tending binding-flange 20.
When the sections A and B are arranged in position for coupling the side plates to the front plate, the openings 9 in the sections A are adapted to register with the recesses 1 in the side plates 1, so that a suitable soldering or cementing medium 16 can enter through the openings 9 and into the recesses 4 and secure said sections A to the side plates. The clamping-section C is provided with an opening 19, which registers with the outer opening 9 of each of the sections A, sothat the cementing or soldering medium 16 will extend through said opening 19.
WV hen the combined coupling and clamping devices are in position, the clamping-sections .0 thereof are adapted to have the flanges 20 thereof engage the vertically-extending edge of the side wall 7 of the section A and the vertically-extending edge of the side wall 11 of the sections B. By employing the combined coupling and clamping devices constructed in the manner as set forth and arranged in the manner asset forth the side plates 1 are securely coupled and clamped to the front plate 18.
Each of the side coupling devices for coupling the side plates to the top plate of the case is designated by the reference character D, and each of said couplings D is an integral body having twopairs of outwardly-extending arms 21, each arm of each pair provided with an opening 22 and formed integral at their upper ends with a top plate 23, adapted ter with the recesses 3 in the plate 1, and a suitable soldering or cementing medium is placed Within the recesses 3 and the openings 22, as indicated by the reference characters 22. Each of the coupling devices D when in position is adapted to have the upper face of its top'plate 23 flush with the upper edge of the side plate upon which the coupling device D is mounted, and the top plate D is adapted to rest upon thetop edge of the side plates 1 and upon the upper face of the top plate 23, and the side edge of the .top plate D abuts against the inverted-L-shaped holding-arm 2 1, and by such arrangement the top plate D of the case is retained in position and coupled to the 'side plates 1.
. The rear of the show-case is preferably provided with two posts H and a cross-rail H, constructed in the ordinary manner, and the rear of the case may be provided with doors, if desired.
For the purpose of connecting the top plate. D a pair of coupling devices E is provided. and each of said coupling devices E consists of a U-shaped member formed of top, bottom, and end walls 25, 26, and 27, respectively, and to the end wall 27 a rearwardly-projecting holding-arm 28 is provided. The top and bottom walls 25 26 are provided with an opening 29, which registers with recesses formed in the top plate D, and said recesses and openings 29 receive a suitable soldering or cementing medium, so as to secure the coupling devices E to the top plate D. The rearwardl'yextending holding-arm 26 is apertured, as at 30, and through said apertures extends a suitable holdfast device for connecting the coupling E to the cross-rail H. (See Fig. 11.)
For the purpose-of securing the rear upper corner of the side plates 1 to the post 1-1 a pair of fastening devices F are employed. (See Fig. 12.) Each of the fastening devices F consists of a U-shaped section 31, carrying a rear plate 32, which is'of such width as to form a pair of laterally-extending flanges 33. The U-shaped section of the fastener F is provided with openings 34 to receive a suitable holdfast device for securing said fastener F to the posts H. The fasteners F are mounted in the posts H in a vertical manner and are in alinement with a suitable groove formed in the post, which receives the inner end of the side plates 1.
The reference character 35 denotes the base or bottom of the show-case, and at the forward corners thereof in its upper face a pair of fastening devices G G is secured. Said fastening devices G G are provided with the seats 36 for the bottom portion of the front and side plates, as shown in Fig. 1, the fastening devices being shown more clearly in Fig. 15. The fastening devices G Gr are each provided with openings 37, through which a suitable holdfast medium can extend, so the front and side plates can be secured to the fasteners G G. It may be stated that in the upper face of the bottom 35 grooves are provided to receive the side and front plates of the case.
From the foregoing construction of, showcase it is evident that what is termed an allglass show-case is set up without providing the top, side, and front plates with openings therethrough to receive holdfast devices and that the top, side, and front plates can be securely connected together by removable coupling, clamping, and fastening devices, and that when occasion requires the case can be readily taken apart and reassembled.
It is thought that the many advantages of an all-glass show-case constructed in accordance with this invention can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will, furthermore, be evident that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and I therefore do not wish to restrict myself to the details of construction hereinbefore described and as set forth in the annexed drawings, but reserve the right to make such changes, variations, and modifications as come properly within the scope of the protection prayed. I
