J..E.GARTLAND.' KNOGKDOWN FURNITURE. 'APPLIUATION FILED JAN-l ao. 1905.A A
' l' 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
"M, amm) lHill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KNOCKDOWN FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1905.
Application filed January 30, 1905. Serial No. 243,277.
To all whom t 'nw/y concern.'
Be it known that I. J AMES EDWIN CARTLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Furniture; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
These and other objects are attained by.
means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a skeleton Supporting-frame for a chiffonnier or other similar piece of furniture. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the corner-posts. Fig. I is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the drawer-supports. Fig. 6 is an end View of the same, and Fig. 7 is an under side plan view of the top of the chidonnieror other similar piece of furniture.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates one of the corner-posts, and 2 is a metal locking-plate seated in a recess 3 in the inner side of said post. The plate 2 is provided witha series of keyhole-slots 3' at suitable intervals, and in rear of said keyholeslots a recess 3X is formed in the corner-post, as shown in broken-away section in Fig. 1. At its upper end the metal plate`2 is bent at right angles to cover the end of the cornerpost, and formed upon the top of said bent end is a locking-lug 4:. The plate 2 is secured in place by means of screws or bolts 5. It will be understood that the corner-posts are identical in construction, and hence the description of one will serve as a description for all. TheV skeleton drawer-supports 6 are of rectangular form, and at each corner a plate 7, provided with an integral lug 8, is secured to said frame by means of screws 9. -End cleats lO are secured at the ends of the drawer-supports and project beyond the same to provide guides for the drawers 11, said drawers Il also being provided With a iianged outer face 12, which forms a stop for said drawer in its sliding movement upon the drawer-support. The top 13 of the piece of furniture is provided upon its under side, near its ends, with plates 13', having keyhole-slots 14 therein, and at the rear ends said plates are bent downwardly, as at 15, and provided with a screwhole 16 for holding said' top in place when assembled.
The manner of assembling and attaching the parts of my invention will be obvious from the foregoing. When the parts are held in place, it will be seen that my device is of good appearance and that I save the lumber which usually covers the two ends and back of the piece of furniture. However, if found necessary to use such covers they may be slid into grooves formed in the corner-posts in an obvious manner.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In knockdown furniture, corner-posts each provided with a locking-plate secured thereto and provided with keyhole-slots, said plates having angular upper ends to overlie the ends of the corner-posts and provided with locking-lugs, in combination with the drawersupports provided with plates secured at the corners thereof and having projecting locking-lugs to engage the slots in the lockingplates on the posts, and a top provided with locking-plates having keyhole-slots adapted for engagement with the lugs on the postplates and each being formed with an angular extension adapted to be secured to the posts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES EDIVIN OAR'ILAND. Witnesses:
Jos. N. THOMPSON, E. P. BERRY, 2d.
