Application filed December 3, 1921. Serial No. 519,824.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, EDMUND Monnis, citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Sectional Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sectional furniture.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide an improved pilaster coupling means for sections of furniture.
Second, to provide an improved compact shelving constructure for such sectional furniture.
Third, to provide in such an improved sectional shelving structure an improved adjustable shelf support.
' Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow,
The objects of the invention are accomplished b the devices and means described in the to lowing specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A. structure which is a preferred embodiment of the invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a detail perspective view of a pair of sections of furniture embodying the features of said invention, the end panel being omitted.
Fi H is a detail view detac ed.
Fig. HT is a detail perspective view of a separate shelf section, the pilasters being omitted, but the pilaster attaching means being present Fig. IV is an enlarged detail of one of the pilaster couplings to the section couplings in exploded relation, showing details of such of the end panel structure.
Fig. V is a detail sectional view on a line corresponding to line 5--5 ofv Fig. TV, showing the coupling for the ends of furniture and the ilaster in place.
Fig. V1 is an en arged detail vertical sectional view taken on line corre line 6-6 of Figs. HT and VlL-s owing the shelf, the corner posts and the detail of the adjustable shelf support.
Fig. VII is an enlarged detail sectional depressions 8 formed the sectional ending to view through the shelf and adjustable support taken on a line corresponding to line 7-7 of Figs. HT and VI.
Fig. Vllllll is a detail perspective view of the adjustable shelf support, showing the engaging member and the screw holes for securing it to the corner post s.
Fig. TX is an enlarged detail sectional yijjw looking down at the line 9-9 of Fig.
Fig. X is a detail plan view of the end of one of the shelves 16, showing the projecting portions 17 between the posts.
11 the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
The various parts of the drawing will be considered by the letters and numerals of reference.
A. is a shelf section, B is a drawer or show case section, C is an end panel adapted to fit and cover either the end of a shelf section or of a drawer or show case section to finish the same. The sections are made up of bases 1, tops 2 provided with front corner posts 3 and rear corner posts 4. The show case section may be made up of horizontal sections, the corners being divided and provided with the fastening means to be hereafter described for coupling the ends of the sections together and covering the couplings with a pilaster. As these posts are substantially the same for either the shelf sectionsor the show case sections they will not be separately described.
The corner posts in the improved structure are not spaced apart but are abutted directly together. The posts 3 are notched at intervals 5 on their front to receive the end coupling means which comprise plates 6, 6 countersunk into the outer faces of said posts and provided with narrow keyhole slots 7 out in from the front thereof with in the metal around, the inner ends of said slots.
Crom be t 9 with screw head 10 and head 11 are disposed within the recesses 5 and as the heads 10 and 11 engage the plate and the bolt 9 is hexagonal it is turned up and draws the parts securely together in a very compact manner. There is clearance in the notch 5 above and below the hexagonal bolt 9. The edges of the post 3 are covered by particularl a pilaster 12 which carries the spring clip member 13 with flaring inner ends 14, 14 and engaging portions 15 adapted to snap upon and engage the hexagonal bolt 9, which thereby secures the pilaster 12 detachably in position.
In the shelf sections the shelves 16 are formed with projecting end portions 17 which extend between the corner posts 3 and 4t and make the space continuous. The posts 3 and 4 are notched at 18 and 19 respectively. The adjustable shelf supports 20 which are made of angle bar and provided with engaging lug portions 21 have projecting ends 22 which engage within the said slots 18 and 19.
The lugs 21 are cut from sections of angle bar and are spot-Welded at 23 to the shelf support 20. Where the shelf is to carry said corner posts.
heavy loads the shelf support 20 is perforated at 24 to receive supporting screws which are inserted therethrough into the These are provided as a matter of extra security and of course. interfere somewhat with the ready adjustability of the shelf supports. From this description it will be seen that I provide a shelf section with a maximum of shelf room, the only portion thereof being occupied being that ofthe cross section of the necessary supporting corner posts. No space is wasted between the sections which are abutted closely together and protected by a very narrow pilaster.
These matters are of the highest consequence in securing the maximum shelf room spring and the maximum storage space in sectional furniture of this type.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to secure by I Letters Patent, is:
1. In sectional furniture, the combination of corner posts having notches at their fronts, side plates disposed at the inner sides oftelaid notches and countersunk thereinto W1 tersunk therearound, a cross bolt centrally disposed in said slots with heads one of which is a screw, adapted to engagethe slots within the said notches and retain the sections to ether, and a pilaster with engaging ngers adapted to engage the said eireiss bolt within. the said notches, as speci- .2. In sectional furniture, the combination of corner posts having notches at their fronts, side lates disposed at the inner's ides of said notc es with horizontal slots, a cross bolt centrally disposed in said slots with horizontal slots with the metal 'coun-' v with projecting ends bolt centrally disposed ,insaid slots with heads one of which is a screw, adapted to engage the slots and retain the sections together, and a pilaster with means adapted to engage the said cross bolt within the said notches, asspecified.
4. In a section of furniture, the combination of corner posts having notches at their fronts, coupling means disposed in the said notches for coupling the posts and thereby securing the sections together, and a pilaster with means adapted to engage the coupling means within said notches, as specified.
5. In a sectional furniture structure, a shelf section com rising corner posts suitably notched on t eir inner edges to receive adjustable shelf supports, shelves with projecting ends extending between said posts, adjustable supports of angle-bar with angular lugs secured thereto with projecting ends to engage the notches in said posts, the said supports being secured to said posts by screws, as specified.
6. In a sectional furniture structure, a shelf section comprisixig corner posts suit ably notched on their inner edges toreceive adjustable shelf su ports, shelves, adjustable supports of anglear with angular lugs secured thereto with projecting ends to engage the notches in said posts, the said sup ports being secured to said posts by screws, as specific 7. In a sectional furniture structure, a shelf section comprising corner posts suitably notched on their inner edges to receive adjustable shelf sup orts, s lves, adjustable supports with angu ar lugs s red thereto with projecting ends to engage the notches in said posts, the said supports being secured to said posts by screws, as specified. I
8. In a sectional furniture structure, a shelf section comprising corner posts suitably notched on their inner edges to receive adjustable shelf sup orts, shelves, adjustable supports with angu ar lugs secured thereto to engage the notches in said posts, as specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal;
. .EDMUNDMORRIIS. .[L.s.]
