IMIBOVEMENT IN PORTABLE GOOKING STOVES.

7 Be it known that I, HARVEY BROWN, of Harlem, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Stove; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, formingpart of this specification.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of stoves, such as are designed for the operation of cooking, washing, and other purposes connected with housekeeping.

The object of the invention is to construct a stove in such a manner that it may be readily taken apart and adjusted together, be portable or capable ofbeing carried or moved from place to place, and used in different places as required, like an ordinary open furnace, and also be capable of being used as n ordinary fixed stove. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line :0 fig. 2.

I construct my improved stove in quadrilateral form, each side being composed of a single plate, A A representing the two side plates, and B B the two end plates. lhese plates may be of any desired form, but the most preferable shape would probably be to have them curve outward at their upper parts so as to increase the capacity of the upper part of the stove, and thereby obtain a greater heat-radiating surface at the top of the fuel.

The side pieces or plates A A, near each end, have two or more oblong upright slots, a, in them, shown clearly in fig. 1, and the end plates, B B, are provided at each side with projecting hooks, I), (see fig. 2,) which pass through the slots at of the plates A, and when the plates A are pressed down a trifle, the hooks b catch over the'upper edges of the slots a, and secure the side and end plates together.

The side and end plates of the stove are prevented from being c asually'detached by the bottom plate C, which is provided with oblong slots, 0, near each side, through which hooks, (Z, attached to the lower ends of the side plates A A, pass. By means of these hooks d, at the lower ends of the plates A, and the slots 0, in the bottom plate 0, the latter is not only secured to the plates A B, but said plates are prevented from being dis connected, as the plates A cannot rise to free the hooks b from the slots a, and in order to prevent the bottom plate C from shifting, so as to free the hooks d from its slots 0, I attach a pawl, D, to the plate 0, which pawl, after the plate C is adjusted in position, and secured to the lower ends of the plates 'A B, is shoved down in front of a lug, 0, attached to one of the plates .A, (see fig. 1.)

By this arrangement the side and end plates, and the bottom plate of the stove, may be very readily and firmly connected together, and when necessary for stowing away in a small space, or for transportation, be readily taken apart. I

E represents the top plate of the stove, which may be connected at one edge to one of the side plates A,

by means of rings f, which form loose joints to admit of a longitudinal movement of the top plate. Thesejoinb connections, however, are not necessary, and may be dispensed with if desired, the weight of the top plate being suflicient to keep it in place.

To the under side of the top plate there are attached two parallel cleats, g g, one near each end, the forward one, when the top plate is down, being at the outer-side ofthe front end plate 13, and the other within the stove, at the front of the rear end plate, (see fig. 1,) and to the under side of the top plate, at the rear of each flange, 9, there is attached a longitudinal plate, It, having an inclined under edge, which is notched or serrated.

The object of these plates it is to admit of the top plate E, when a closely-fitting cover is not required, being elevated in a greater or less degree, and retained in an elevated state, said plate being elevated by being drawn forward, the lower notched edges of the plates 7L catching on the tops of the end plates B B.

To the top of each side plate Athere is attached a wire, F. These wires are bent so as to have two inclined parts of equal length, the elevated ends of'said parts being at the centres of the wires,as shown in fig. 1.

Gris a bailor handle, the ends of which are fitted on the wires F, so that it may move freely thereon, and be moved forward and backward out of the way when not required for use; and when required for use be drawn up to the angles at the centres of the wires F, where it will catch and admit of the stove being readily carried from place to place. p

The plates of this stove may lie constructed of wrought or cast iron; it is provided with a-grate, H, as usual, and, if necessary or desired, it may be provided at either side with a tubular, flange, to receive a draught-pipe. l

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The connecting together of the side and end plates'A B, and bottom plate 0 of the stove,.by means of the hooks 6 cl and slots a c, snbstantiallyin the manner as shown and described.

2. The pawl D and lug c, in combination with the hooks b d and slots a c, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth. l

3. The lid or cover E, provided with the inclined platesh it, for the purpose of admitting of the lid or coyer being tightly fitted on the stove, or more or less elevated, as desired.

4. The bent or angular wires F F and hail G, arranged and applied to the stove,.substantially in the manner as and for the purpose specified.
