Description

No. 763,918. I PATENTED JUNE 28,1904. R. L. MAGOON. GUARD FOR DENTAL TOOLS.
no MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented June 28, 1904.
ROY L. MAGOON, OF GRACEVILLE, MINNESOTA.
GUARD FOR DENTAL TOOLS- SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,918, dated June 28, 1904.
Application filed November 2, 1903. Serial No. 179,516, \No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RoY L. MAGOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Graceville, in the county of Bigstone and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for DentalTools;
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to the handpieces of dental engines; and the object of the invention is to produce a guard or shield positioned about a grindstone or other instruments, whereby when an operator is at work upon the teeth of a patient the tongue or checks adjacent to the work may be protected from contact with the tool.
More specifically, the invention comprises a hood or guard having a hollow shank portion adapted for attachment to the handpiece of a dental engine and one side of the hood or shield being flaring and having an elongated opening somewhat contracted along its opposite edge, so that the tool carried between the walls of the shield may be applied to the work and at the same time hold the parts back from contact with the tooth, by whichconstruction the operator may have access to the parts be ing operated upon and at the same time is able to see his work.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the protecting-shield. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. 4 is an end view of the shield, and Fig. 5 is a View showing the device attached to aliandpiece of a dental engine with the grinding-wheel mounted on the stem of the tool.
Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a protectingshield which is made, preferably, of the shape illustrated and of any suitable material. Said hood has flaring sides with a wide opening B,
the opposite longitudinal sides of which taper in opposite directions and merge into a hollow shank portion D, which has a slot E cut in from one end, and an offset E from the end of said slot for engagement with a lug or other fastening means upon the handpiece of the engine. carried by the handpiece projects through an aperture in the end of said shield and is positioned intermediate the walls of the hood. The portion of said shield opposite the wide opening portion has an elongated slot F, one end of which terminates adjacent to the end of the shank portion, while its other end eX- tends into the flattened end of the shield, as
shown clearly in the end view of the drawings.
The marginal edges of the flaring portion of the hood are conveXed, as shown at K, and
merge into the shank portion adjacent to the aperture through which the stem of the tool passes.
By the peculiar shape of the shield shown I have found from experience that the tongue, the gums, and the checks of a patient may be held away from bridgeworkupon the teeth while being operated upon by such tools as grindstones, saws for separating the teeth, &c., and at the same time the operator is afforded means of seeing the work which is being accomplished by the tool having the shield.
While I have shown a particular shape of shield embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the same, if desired, without in any way depart ing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An attachment to the handpiece of dental engines comprising a shield having a shank portion through which the stem of a tool is adaptedto pass, said shield being flaring and having an elongated slot opposite its flaring opening, and adapted to surround the tool held therein, as set forth.
2. An attachment for the handpiece of a The shank portion of the tool dental engine comprising a shield having a shank portion adapted to be secured to said handpiece, an aperture to receive the shank portion of a tool, said shield having flaring sides terminating in an end at right angles to the shank portion of the shield, and a portion of the shield opposite its flaring opening having an elongated slot, the edges of the shield forming said slot being parallel and terminating in a eoncaved marginal recess in the end of the shield, as set forth.
3. Adeviee for attachment to the handpiece of a dental engine comprising a shield having a hollow shank portion adapted for attachment to said handpiece, said shield having a flaring opening, an aperture to receive the stem of a tool, the edges of the flaring portion of the shield being convexed, and an elongated slot in the contracted portion of the shield opposite the flaring opening, the marginal edges of said flaring opening being eonvexed and merging into a coneaved recess in the end of the shield, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ROY L. MAGOON.
