OB-VILLE B}. SHOCKLEY, OF SYLVATUS, VIRGINIA.
SAW-SET.
Application filed June 10, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORVILLE R. SHOCKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sylvatus, in the county of Carroll and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw sets and similar devices and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient structure which may be utilized in setting or removing the set from saws of almost every type such as cross cut saws, hand saws, small band and circular saws and the like.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a saw set having a conveniently applicable attachment for enabling the set to be used for saws having very fine teeth.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a hammer which may be so adjusted that it may be utilized for setting hand or power saws, for driving a setting plunger or for removing a set.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan View. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the hammer. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View showing the fine tooth attachment applied thereto.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents an anvil or setting block to the sides of which are movably secured the yoke members 2 each of which is provided at its rear end with a vertical standard 3 having apertures 4 to receive the pivoting axle 5. Pivoted upon this axle is a yoke member 6 in which the hammer staif 7 is adjustably threaded. The outer end of the staff is preferably squared as shown so as to receive the hammer 8 which is arranged to engage the anvil or setting block 1. This hammer is provided with a striking face 9 adapted to set hand saws and on the same end with a face 10 adapted for setting cross cut saws while the opposite end of the hammer indicated at 11 is adapted for taking up the set of different types of saws and the side of the hammer may be utilized for striking the plunger, as will be hereinafter described.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, i915.
Serial No. 844,273.
Mounted upon the setting block and having overhanging flanges 12 to prevent lateral movement thereon is a gage block 13 which is secured in adjusted position by a set screw 14. This gage block regulates the engagement of the hammer with the saw tooth and when the axle 5 is in the upper holes d the hammer will strike the teeth squarely, while when the axle is in the lower hole L the hammer will strike the teeth at an angle. In this latter instance the end 11 is used. Mounted upon the gage block is a punch holding bracket 15 having separated arms 16 and 17 apertured to receive the punch 18 which is normally raised by a spiral spring 19 which surrounds the punch and bears upon its lower end upon the arm 17 and at its upper end upon a collar 20 secured to the punch. The bracket has a rearwardly extending projection 21 slotted as shown at 22 so as to receive the set screw and be held in adjusted position thereby upon the gage block.
The yoke members 2 may be removed from the anvil or setting block so that an ordinary hand hammer may be employed to strike the teeth. It is to be understood that the attachment is only used where it is desired to set saws having say sixteen to twenty teeth to the inch, the attachment being removed when desired to set ordinary cross cut or hand saws. When the attachment is used the hammer is turned to horizontal position so that the side of the same engages the plunger.
Vhat is claimed is A saw set comprising an anvil member, angular supporting members secured on opposite sides thereof and having a shaft adjustably mounted therebetween, a yoke member journaled on the shaft, a handle adjustably mounted in the yoke member, a hammer head reversibly mounted on the handle and adapted to engage the anvil member at different angles, and a gage member adjustable upon the anvil member for determining the degree of engagement of the hammer head with the tooth of a saw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
