UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
JASON O. TAYLOR AND EDVIN C. VILSON, OF FREEPORT, COUNTY OF WOOD, OHIO.
SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,477, dated May 23, 1899.
Application filed June 16, 1898. Serial No. 683,612. (No model.)
To all whom, t may conceive:
Be it known that we, JASON O. TAYLOR and EDWIN C. WILSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Vood and State of Ohio, have invented a new v and useful Saw-Set, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to saw-sets; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and improved device of this character in lwhich the punching-tool is adj ustably mounted with respect to a number of die-faces, so that the teeth of saws may be set at different inclinations.
W'ith this object in view the present invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the saw-set. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely through the punch and supportingarm. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the post or supporting-arm.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base-plate of suitable size and shape, provided with bolt or screw openings 2, whereby the device is secured upon a support.
The punch 3 is preferably rectangular in cross-section, being provided with a head 4 upon the upper end thereof, and its lower end 5 forming the upper face of the die. This punch is mounted in a yoke or U shaped bracket G, having arms 7 ,provided with alined openings 8, receiving and carrying the punch. A coiled spring 9 is arranged around the body of the punch and between the arms 7, bearing against the lower arm at one end and against a transverse pin or shoulder 10, provided upon the punch, whereby the latter is held normally in an elevated position.
The bracket G is supported in apost 1l, provided upon an extension l2 of the base, by means of an arm 13, preferably formed 'integral with the bracket. This arm is' adjustable within an opening 14, provided through the post 11, and is secured therein at any desired adjusted position by means of a setscrew 15. The opening 14 is preferably'rec- 'tangular and the arm 13 of a similar shape,
so as to hold the bracket always in its proper position and prevent turning thereof. This opening is arranged at anangle, as shown in at an inclination to the base for a purpose hereinafter more fully described.
The front end 16 of the base 1 is preferably straight, as shown, and beveled or inclined downwardly, as at 17, forming the lower dieface. clined faces 17 are formed in order to provide means whereby the teeth of the saws may be set at different angles.
In the operation of the device the saw-blade is placed flat upon the base and arranged transversely thereof, as indicated in dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2, with the teeth over the beveled faces 17. The arm 13 is then adjusted through the post 1l, as heretofore described, until the punch 3 is arranged over the desired face 17, when the set-screw 15 is tightened and the punch thus securely held in position, anda sharp blow with a hammer is struck upon the head 4, forcing the punch down against the tooth, and thus setting the same to the desired angle in the die formed between the beveled face 17 and the lower end of the punch.
The object of disposing the punch at an angle to the base of the device is to allow the die-face 5 of the punch to engage more evenly with the die-face 17 on the base, and thus more effectually set the tooth.
The post l1 is preferably set beyond the end of the base in order to permit an unobstructed adjustment of the saw transversely of the base-plate.
The improved saw-set as herein described presents an exceedingly simple and effective device composed of few parts, which can be quickly and easily assembled together for use, any of which can be replaced if broken or lost. The dies 17, being `an integral portion of the base, are always :drm and not capable of becoming loosened by use, and when the punch is adjusted they are in the correct position for operation.
A number of differently beveled or irlssy Fig. 4, so as to dispose the bracket and punch The device is also capable of various changes l in its form, proportion, and minor details without departing from the spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and therefore we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise construction and arrangement as herein described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. InasaW-set, the combination with abase having a series of different transversely-alined fixed die-faces, of a punch having an adjustment longitudinally 'of the series of die-faces, whereby the punch may be setto coperate with any of the individual die-faces, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a saw-set, the combination with abase having a plurality of different fixed transversely-alined die-faces, of a punch, av support provided upon the base and adj ustably carrying the punch, andmeans for locking the punch upon the support when adjusted to cooperate With any desired die-face, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a saw-set, the combination with a base having a plurality of different alined fixed die-faces, of a punch, a yoke or bracket having an arm and carrying the punch, and a support having a set-screw, the bracket being adjustable longitudinally of the die-faces,and the set-screw adapted to engage the arm and lock the bracket and punch when the latter is adj usted to coperate with any desired dieface, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a saw-set, the combination with a base having different die-faces, of a punch, a yoke or bracket carrying the punch and provided with an arm, a post provided upon the base and formed with an opening therein, the said arm being slidably mounted in the opening, whereby the punch may be adjusted to coperate with any of the die-faces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a saw-set, the combination with a base having differently-inclined die-faces, of a punch, and a yoke or bracket carrying the punch and provided with an arm, a post or support for the bracket, formed upon the base and provided with an opening arranged at an A inclination to the base, the said arm being slidably'mounted therein, whereby the punch is adjustable with relation to the individualdie-faces and is disposed at an angle to the base, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a saw-set, the combination with a base having different die-faces, of a punch, a bracket carrying the punch and having an arm, and asupport slidably receiving the arm, the punch being arranged at an inclination to the base, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
7 In a saw-set, the combination with a base having different die faces, of a punch, a bracket slidably carrying the punch and having an arm, and a support slidably receiving the arm, whereby the punch may be adjusted to cooperate with any of the die-faces, sub-A stantially as shown and described.
8. In a saw-set, the combination with a base, having different die-faces, of a punch, a bracket carrying the punch and provided with an arm, and a support having an opening formed therein at an inclination to the base and adapted to receive the arm of the bracket, substantially as shown and described.
9. In a saw-set, the combination of a base, an alined series of different die-faces, provided upon the base, and a punch supported over the die-faces and having an adjustment for the entire length of the series of die-faces, to coperatie with any one thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own We have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
