tro .ALL WIIOM IT MAYCONCERN:
Be it known that I,'DAVID MII.LERof the'eity and county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans for Holding White Lead, die.; andI do hereby declare that the foliowing is a full andA exact description thereof, reference beinghadto the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersl of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the mouth of a can with a Harige which extends inward, and male-screw threads on the body of the can, at or near its mouth, said male-screw threads being adapted to female-screw threads formed in the ange of the lid, said screw-threads andA lid bein-g so arranged with relation to the body of the can, that the lid will, when properly screwed to its -place, press down on the ange, projecting inward at the mouth of the can; the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner hereinafter described. Y
'To enable others skiiieddn the art to make and -use nay-invention, I will proceedito describe its construction and operation. In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specifications- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved can for holding white lead, Snc.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the sanne.V
In the drawings, A represents the body of the'can, provided with ordinary cerrugations, marked D, which are usedvfor giving stiiness to the body'ot' the can. C represen-ts ordinary bail-washers, for the bail or handle, e.. At the mouth of the body of the can is a ange, 2:, which projects inwards, (see tig. 2.) x2 represents the male-screw threads, which are fitted to female-screw threads made in the ange x of the lid-B. The screw-threads :v2 give stiffness to the body of the can at'its mouth, and the screw-threads in ange x1 of the lid, give firmness to it. The ange x, at the mouth-of the can, projects inward, and is so arranged that when the lid B isscre-wed down to its place on the body A of the can, it will press down firmly on the langesc, and thereby prevent the lead from siping or oozing out into and betweenthe screw-threads ofthe flange a: of the lid, and-the screw-threads z of the body A. The screw-tl1reads are fomed by what is known to tinners as the chasing- The advantage of my improvement consists in the ease and facility with which the can can be sealed up, and in the unseali-ng ofthe can, without injury to either canor its lid, and also in the eheapness and; durability, both of the canand its lid. j l
Having thus described the nature and construction of my improvement, .what I claim as of my invention, is
The combination ofthe flange x and male-screw threads at the mouth of the body ofthe can, when used in connection with the female-screw threads inthe ange of the lid, substantially as herein described and for the purpose set for'th.
' A DAVID MILLER.
