Be it known that I, ROBERT PORTER, ofthe city of Philadelphia, in the Stute of Pennsylvania, have invented anew und useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Ca-nsand I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear.` and eiract description oi" the construction and operation ol the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing, making a. part ol' this specification, and to the letters .of rel'erencemarked thereon l The nature of my invention consists in providing a sheet-metal can with nnattaehed adjustable vent-'plug` l for-the purpose of facilitating in filling liquids into and discharging them from the can. l

. .Referring tothe drawings, A B is a eoinmoncylindrical tin con, haringv th'e'usu'ul short mouthftnbe a', for receiving a.A cork or other stopper; C is 'the attached adjustable vent-plug. A short cylindrical tube',, having, in this instance, a screw-thread cut around in its .inner periphery, is soldered ,festin the top plate ofthe con AB, at the side opposite to the mouth-tube a', substantially as represented in the drawings. The plug 4(l hasl a screw-thread cut around in its stem c, so os to adapt itto be screwed accurately into the'short tube b It has also a head which produces a. dat shoulder, c", that fits down closely upon the upper-end of i5', when the. plug is screwed down lirmly thereon, or upon an intervening washerV or collar, (not shownin the drawing-J so-i as to make an air-tightjoint thereat, substantially as shown in the drawing.Y The lower end of the plug C has t in this instonce'a slot, 4, cut diametrically across it to the depth ol' about half the length of` the stem c, andet opposite sides of this slot 4 two stays, c c', project downward, and (after the plug C is inserted in the tube l 6') bent radially outward at their lower endsso as to cause the sume to come in contact with the lower enl of b', when the plug C is unserewed, or raised high enough to bring the upper end of its slot 4 a little above the tube b', hud thus produce the requiredair-vent through the slot. (Sec the faint lines in 'the drnwing,\vhich represent the plug as raised or the vent opened.) i i It will be readily seen that this simple device will afford immediate and always present and ready means of/givingthe necessary vent to a can, either in filling oremptying it, and that it is neither expensive of con` struction and application, nor liable to get out of order, nor allow the can to lea-k at the parl: when closed-points of considerable importance to dealers in paint-oils, spirits, &e. .What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A sheet-metal can provided with an attached vent-plug C, having stays e e', fixed to its' lower end, sopasn to prevent the said plug from being detached or entirely withdrawn from its cylindrical tube and at'the sume time allow o`-its being elevated su'iciently therein to vent the can, asroccasioumay require, as described and set forth.
