Description
ALONZO J. F. HOWRD, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 76,079, dated March 31, 1868.
IMPROVED BOOT-GRIMPER.
"Lfllgc tlrehult ttfcmh tu in llgesc etttrs ateni :mh mnltlng'gatt nl llg smut.
TO ALLTO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, ALONZO (LF. HOWARD, of Milford, in the county of Worcester, and State of Massa.- chusetts, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Boot-Crimpers and ['do hereby declare the following to be a full, cleur, and exact description `thereof', due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making par'toi` this specification, und in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, i
Figure 2 a vertical section of a boot-crimper constructed'in accordance with my invention Figure 3 being a perspective view of one of its roughened or serrated movablejaws.
VThis invention is an improvement in that class of boot-crimping devices in which are combined'a jawed clasp, a pyramidal block, a straining-screw, and Itwo movable clamping-jaws, the object ofthe invention being to leave the outer extremities .or corners` ofthe upper of a. boot intact, or not scored or mashed by the serrated jaws of the implement, as well as to enable a workman to readily see such parts of the upper while applying the `crimper to it. v
The invention consists in extending or elongating the Shanks of the movablejaws in such manner that the upper portiouofvthe facesfof the jaws shall be somewhat below the under side of the bridge of the clasp, and lcave an interval betwceiLthc two for reception of the corners of the upper, in manner as hereinafter explained and illustrated. v
The accompanying drawings illustrate a`boot-crimper, in which a is the yoke or clasp, itsjaws or lips being shou'nat b b. C is the straining-screw, and d the pyrumidal block or frustum, through which the strainingscrew e i's screwed. y
The movable jaws are shown aitff, as arranged within the yoke a, and on opposite sides of the frustum d, and between it and thc stationary jaws or lips b b, each movable jaw having a shank or neck, g, extending up i from it, such arm, at its upper purt, beingprovided with two lateral ears, c c, projecting from it,jas represented.
The above is the construction of a boot-crimpcr as shown in United States Letters Patent, No. 66,035, and grunted to De Witt C. Mowrey on thcth day of June, 1867.
My invention, which muy-be considered in the light of an improvement upon the said putcnt of Mowrey, consist-s, as shown `in fig. 3 of the drawings, in elongting the shanksg g of the movable jaws, and ext-ending them below the bridge alot` thc yoke d, und making them somewhat thinner than the serrated jawsff, thus leaving a small interval or spa-ce, L or z', between such jaws and the adjacent part of thc yoke, both at the sides and ends of such jaws. j
It will readily be seen that the spaces h h allow of the enclosure of Vthe extreme corners 'of `the uppers of the boots .without ahrading or indenting their surfaces, the advantage of which will at once manifestitself to practical boot and shoe manufacturers. V v
The spaces h h also allow the workman to see and adjust the corners of the upper while applying` the crimper to them, 4which cannot be d oue with the present construction of such crimpers.
The above-described improvement, although to persons unacquainted with the use of boot-crimpcrs, appearing very small, is in reality an important one, and one. which will be understood and appreciated by those using the implement so constructed. i A
I claim as my invention, und desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- The construction of the movable jewsff, that is, as made with the elongated Shanks g g, for vthe purpose F of lowering thejawsff below the top ofthe clasp a, and forming the spaces h t, as and for the purposes before described.
ALONZO J. F. HOWARD.
