Letters Patent No. 67,422, dated August 1867;
IMPROVED Boer mosses-HEELS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAYCONCERN Be it known that we, C. DYER, Jr., and ELLIS DRAKE, of Stoughton, Norfollz county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement im Boots and Shoes and we do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereofi which will enable others skilled in the art to 'inake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in providing the heel of a boot or shoe with aseries of India'rubber or other elastic studs, which are first secured to a metallic plate, and then by such plate fastened to the under or the ordinary treading surface of the heel. This invention also consists in the useof a metallic shank piece that is applied and secured to the boot or shoe-sole in a novel manner, as will be hereinafter particularly described. In the accompanying plate of drawings our improvement in boots and shoes is illustrated.

A, in the drawings, represents the boot or shoe-heel, to the treading surface B ofwhich a plate, C, is secured by means of a centre-screw or bolt, D, screwing by its inner end into the screw-nut E, fixed in position upon the inside of the heel. This plate Q is provided with a series of India-rubber or other elastic studs, F, which are headed at one end, 4}, and by such headed ends held in the openings H, made in the plate C'to receiveJhem I, the metallic shank piece, which forms a continuation of the screw-nut E for the bolt D.
Among the many advantages secured by our improvement in boot and shoe-heels may be here mentioned that it issimplo, strong, cheap, practical, and durable; that it imparts a safe and sure footing or tread to the boot or shoe.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The elastic studs Fin the perforated plate 0, clamped by their heads G- between such plate and the treading surface B of the boot-heel by means of the centre-screw D fitting into the nut E upon. the shank I, all constructed and arranged as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
