TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY GONCERN:
vBe it known that-I, JOHN W. BENTLEY, of wvoonsooket, in the county of Providence, and Stateof Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Spotted or Olouded Yarn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the-art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a. front View of my improved machinery for making clouded yarn.
Figure 2, a vertical section of the same, tak'en in the line ft' a', iig. I. v
Similar letters ofpreference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of clouded or spotted yarn, and consists in rollers and changegear, operating intermittently, attached to an ordinary spinning-i`rame, by which a portion of the threads of one color are continuously spun, while roping oi' another color is combined with them in such manner as to produce changes in the color or shade of the yarn at regular distances apart, as hereinafter more particularly described. v
The drawing represents an ordinary spinning-frame and rollers, to which my improvements are attached. Two. or more threads of any colo'r, coming from the spool E, pass dou-n between the ordinary rollsj N, and down in front of the additional rolls HI, and under the small roll L, coming in contact with the raping of some other color-runni ng from a sliding spool, shown in red, fig. 2, resting on the friction-roll or drum C. After the roping passes between the rolls H I, the two colorsof' the ropingfandrthe thread from the spool E run together, andere spun in the usual man ner, but this combination continues only se long as the motion of the relLC and the rolls H I is continued, which motion is intermittent in its nature, being operated by a change-gear lm-Ul G, engaging the carrier-'gear K during a part of its revolution only. The carrier-gear K works into the gear J, which drives the roll I, and also works into a train of gear-wheels, tt b c, as shown in the drawing, to drire the drum G. rIhus the drutn C and the rolls II' I have a corresponding intermittent motion, while the rolls F N have a continuous or constant motion; and `while the thread from the spool is continuously spun, the roping lfrom the spool resting on the drum C combines with thread to run the different colors together, in spinning onl v,
while the change-gear Gengages the carrier-gear K, and the roping breaks whenever the change-gear disen gages, and the motion of the drumkand the rolls II I is suspended, thus cutting ofi` the combination of diil'erent colors for a part of the revolution ofthe change-gear; but'as soon as the ehangegear engages the carrier-.gear
Ii, the roping again starts, and is spun with the thread, as before, whereby aspotted or clouded yarn is produced by the union of the two colors at regular distances.
The spotting or clouding of the yarn may be varied by making the change-gcarso as to operate lilcrently, by engaging and disengaging the carrier-gear at different parts of its revolution.
The smallroll L receives its motion continuously, by a band, d, from the roll N.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as ilew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ibe combination of the additional rolls H I L, and the change-gear G, with a common spinning-frame,
arranged and operating substantially as andfor the purposes herein shown and described.
` JOHN' W. entertain Witnesses:
GEORGE BENTLEY, BENJ. BERTENSHAW.
