Description

uiten .tutes @strut @frn Fys-GOING, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, lAssicNoR To HIMSELF ANnn WILGOX, or SAME PLAGE.v
Letters Patent No. 75,897, dated March' 24, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT N-BI`|OCKS FOB. CUTTING AND-SHAPING BRIMS 0F H ATS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known tha-t I, F. R. GOING, of oston, in, the county of Suffolk, and. State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Curling, Cutting, and Shaping Boards; and I do hereby declare that thc following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencev marked thereon.. n
The nature of my invention consists in providing a' sinkage immediately around the centre guiding or bandblock, into which thc brim-of the hat may be pressed; also, in providing a guiding-edge to regulate the motion of a cuttinggauge, so that an inexperienced hand may cut'the curl in the best possible manner.. I n the drawings l Figure 1 is a plan of' my improved hat-board.
Figure 2 is a cross-vertical `section of the same. t
Figure 3 represents a cutting-gauge, which forms no` part of my invention, but is required in cutting the A curl, and must be referred to in explaining the use' of my board.
B C is a circular board, made somewhat larger than the brim ofthe hat. AThe surface of this board that is not covered bythe band-bloek A is what is technically called a warped surface, and so made to suit the style into which the brim of the hat is to be pressed. H H is a sinlmgeextendingr around the band-block, this sinkage being of the Width required for the brim of the hat.' D D', E E is a hat ring extending around the sinkage H H. The outer line a 6 c (1 of this ring draws near to the inner line a b c,d,vat E and E', and is more dis-l tant at D D', so that in cutting the curl, or Athat part of the brim that is folded back on to itself, the knife M of the gauge K, fig; 3, will cut on a line more distant'from the line a b c' cl, (which corresponds to the outer edge ofthe brim,) at E and'E, than at-D and DI.
To use myimproved block, I proceed as follows: The hat is on the band-block A, and the brim is crowded down into the sinkage H H. This operation causes the outer periphery of the brim, of which the curl is formed, to be thrown up into a position from which it may be very readily .doubled back on to the brim, thus forming the curl. The next operation is to trim or cut the curl.- This is done by pressing the shoulder `L, lig. 3, of the cutting-gauge against the outer edge, a b c eZ of the guidcring, and at the same time bearingdown and sliding l t-h'e gauge along, so that the knife M. vmay cut the curl as desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The -recessH H', formed immediately `around the band-block, and between the crown-block and cuttingguide E, substantially as described and for thc purpose set forth. v
2. The guiding-edge n b c dof the guide E, against which the shoulder of the cutting-gauge l rests, in the operation of cutting the curl, in `combination with the hutblock, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. t p
F. R. GOING.
