IMPROVE!) METHOD lOli' HANGING WINDOW-SSHES.

To ALL WHOM 1r MAY ooNcERN:`
Bc it known that I, THOMAS BULLIVANT, of London, England, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Hanging Balanced Window-Sashes and Roller Window-Blinds orl Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled inthe art'to make and use the same, reference being had' to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to a new and improved mode of hanging balanced windowllsashes, whereby the latter may 'ne taken lfrom the window-frame with the greatest facility, for the purpose of cleaning, glazing, painting, dto., and the sashes also fitted in the window-frame without any diihculty whatever. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure l is afaee view of a window, partly in section, and provided with my improvement.
Figure 2, a vertical section of the same, taken in the line xa, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a windowr'ame, which is constructed in substantially the same manner as those now generally madcfor balanced o1` adjusted sashes. B B represent the sashes, and C the weights, the cords D ot' the latter passing over pulleys, E, in the upper part of vthe frame, and having the weights .C fitted in boxes, F, at one side of the frame, as shown in fig. 1. The cords D are not attached directly to the sashes but to metal plates G, as shown clearly in iig. 1. These"plates Gare fitted in grooves a in the ends ofthe sashes, the upper ends o f the plates provided with hooks b to catch into holes c in metal plates @Ion the tops of the sashes, andthe low'er ends ofthe plates provided with upright lips e to catch into holesfin plates g, secured to the inner sides and lower parts of the grooves a. The plates G, when thus tted in the grooves a, are secured in position by screws h, which passgdirectly into the saches, and through holes eX in the plates made for them, the plates'when thus secured extending out from the ends of the sashes sudiciently far to it into grooves t' in the inner sides of the jamh-pieces 7' of the window-frame, and serve as guides for the sashes as the same are raised and lowered. This 'will be fully'understood by referring to-g. l.
In case it is desired to remove the sash from the frame A, the screws h of each plate Gare removed, thc plates G shoved-down, so that the hooks bwill be out of and below the holes c in the plates d, and the lips e out of and below the ,holesfin the plates g, and the plates G are pressed inward, so that their outer edges will he flush with the outer edges of the sashes, the plates being secured in this position by-vre-inserting the screws 7L, which pass through a hole, c, made in thc plates G for them, as shown in fig. 1.
When the `plates G are thus adjusted, the sashes may be removed from the Window-frame, and the glass cleaned, or the sashes glazed or painted without any dii'culty whatever, and the sashes may be retted in the frames with the greatest 'facility,'all that is required to effect this, boing the removal of the screws h, and the adj ustingout'ward of the plates Gto the position previously described, and thc inserting of the screws h through the holes eX Y j VI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Themethod of attachment of the weight-cords D to the sashcs, through the medium ofthe adjustable plates G, constructed,^`arranged, and applied in the manner shown, sonas to admit of being adjusted to serve as guides for the sashes, and also to admit of the sashes being readily removed from the window-frame when desired.
The above specification of my invention signed by me,'tlis 23d day of August', 1867,
THOMAS BULLIVANT.
