The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in windows and more particularly to novel awning type window assembly units constructed primarily from extruded elements and assembled'in a manner to permit ready removal of the tiltable vents and omission ofv the customary transversely extending vent division framing elements.
In recent years, theme of awning type-metal window assembly units has grownto tremendous volumes. This is. particularly true in home and apartment house usage where the awning type or horizontally hinged window vents have become popular because of the ability to vent the window'opening even in inclement weather without any appreciable danger of the rain entering through the vented opening in the absence of a driving wind. Windows of this type proposed in the prior art customarily employ vent framing elements extending transversely between the jar'nbs to provide intermediate sealing members and structural reinforcement. These prior art window assemblies also have customarily been furnished with non-removable tiltable vents necessitating original installationwith the vents un'glazed since the contractor normally is required to install: the assembly units in place to define the wall opening'and then build the remainder of the wall and building around them and is not willing to assume the disk and danger of breakage of the window glass. The result is that the unglazed vent framing and the transverse framing elements of the prior art window assemblies present inviting supports for scatfolding and walk boards and are used as ladder steps and are often damaged by such misuse. Also the vents thenn selves must be glazed after completion of the heavy construction by glaziers working either from ladders or from expensive outside scafiolding with their incident hazards to the workers.
Furthermore, the window units of the prior art, due to the transverse, framing elements and their hinge constructions, have'been limited in their angle of opening so that full advantage of the descending cool air, often present in warm and hot weather after the sun has set, cannot be effectively directed into the interior of the house or apartment building to more effectively cool the occupants. This limitation together with the non-removability of the prior art' window vents also poses a cleaning problem since the exterior of the glass pane cannot be etfec tively and conveniently washed except by standing on ladders or other support surfaces provided exteriorily of the f ulted States Patent C interconnected jamb, header and sillmembers and readily is to provide an awning type window assembly unit having the main framing elements and other structural parts formed principally from lengths of extruded shapes which may be made from aluminum or other suitable metals or materials, even plastic, and glazed vents unitarily mountable and removable from said main framing after the main framing has been secured in the wall opening and completion of the other building construction work likely to cause breakage of the glass panes;
Still another object of the present invention resides in providing an awning type window with pivots oliset towardthe'exterior face of the window main frame but within the confines of the main framing to provide a full 90 or better angle of opening when desired to take advantage of the descending cool air masses prevalent after sundown in warm weather.
:lA further object of the present invention is to form the main rectangular framing elements of a window unit of a novel cross-sectional configuration, namely, a channel-like element having an inner short wall section and an opposed outer long wall section extending respectively from the opposite edges of the connecting web section and provided adjacent their respective opposite ends with socket grooves along the opposed wall sections for respectively receiving inner and outer corner connectors and guide brackets for supporting conventional slide bars and housing suitable frame concealed window operating mechanism.
Still another important object of the present invention is to provide an awning window structure wherein the ventilators are individually removably secured to the frame or operating mechanism for the ventilators, whereby the ventilators may be field mounted to facilitate shop glazing of the ventilators. V
'=.A further object of the present invention is to provide an awning window structure wherein the. mounting means for the ventilators is adjustable to permit individual movement of a selected end of any ventilator to assure sealing contact with the adjacent frame element of the window structure although the frame may not be installed plumb and level.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an awning window structure with a novel and improved .g'eared operator which is extremely small and compact in structure and so designed as to be concealed and housed within one of the extruded jamb members of the main window frame.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an awning window including one or more ventilators which may be raised above the horizontal to facilitate increased ventilation and readily removed for ease of cleaning the ventilators.
Still another object of the present invention resides in the provision of ventilator units made up of opposed end and top and bottom extrusion bars of double channel form having opposed longitudinally extending rib elements defining socket grooves along one set of the opposed wall sections for receiving corner connectors.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide an awning window that is extremely neat and attractive in appearance, efiicient and durable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture and service, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

While plates 56 may be secured in any suitable manner to end frame elements 2830, they preferably'take the form shown in Figure 15. As there shown plate 56 comprises a main base portion spanningsocket grooves 36-38 of end frame elements 2830 and a pintle carrying portion of reduced width extending outwardly beyond the opposed ends of grooves 36-38 and extending parallel to the plane of grooves 36-38 in outwardly spaced overlying relation to corner joiner elements 40-empl0yed to connect the respective end frameelements to top frame element 32. Suitable screws 57 respectively passing through the base portion of plate 56 in position to re spectively thread into the main web of elements 28--30 and the respective corner joiners 40 secure plates 56 against movement with respect to frame elements 28-30 within the space between the opposed ribs.
The socket grooves 22 of the side members 12 and 14 slidably accommodate anchor plates 68 that support pivot pins 70 for the lower ends of hinge links or fulcrum arms 72. Clamp screws 74 pass through suitable apertures formed in the side members 12-14, extend through slots 76 in the plates 68 and thread into pressure strips or washers 78, which overlie plates 68 in the area of the space between grooves 22, to lock plates 68 in final adjusted position. This locking is effected bytightening screws 74 so as to draw the washers 78 againstthe plates 68 thereby causing the plates to bear against th'emain web of side members 1214 and lock the plates 68 in adjusted position. In this manner the pivot pins 70 may be selectively raised or lowered for a purpose later to be described.
The other ends of hinge links 72 are connected to anchor plates 80 slidably and adjustably engaged in the socket grooves 34 and 36 of ventilator side members 28 and 30. The plates 80 fixedly support pins or trunnions 82 that extend laterally from side members 28--30 and into suitable apertures in the upper ends of the hinge links 72. Peripheral grooves are formed in the outer ends of pins 82 to accommodate resilient C-clips 84 that retain the links 72 removably pivoted to pins 82.
A laterally extending torque shaft 86 positioned in the sill 18 has its opposite ends fixedly connected to torque shaft arms 88 which are connected by pitmans 90 to the lower ends of the slide bars 5 4 for raising and lowering bars 54 and closing and opening ventilators 26 in unison. Rotational movement is imparted to shaft 86 by a novel operator mechanism carried by a sectional journal box or housing 92 suitably secured in the lower end of one of the side members 12 or 14. This housing, preferably formed from a novelly shaped extrusion, houses a gear segment 94 fixedly secured to shaft 86 and meshingly engaging a worm gear 96 rotatably supported in the hous-.

While any suitable means may be employed to fixedly connect shaft 86 to arms 88 and'gear segment 94, arms 88 and segment 94 are preferably provided with multisided openings that receive related portions of a multisided torque shaft 86 which passes freely through an engearsegment 94 is rotated by worm gear 96, the torque shaft and its connected arms 88 will also be rotated to impart through pitmans a vertical sliding movement to the slide bars for raising or loweringthe ventilators.
Referring for the moment specifically to Figure 4, it will be noted that pivot pin 60 is disposed forwardly of the longitudinal axis of slide bar 54 whereas pivot pin 70 is disposed rearwardly of the longitudinal axis of slide bar 54. As a result of this relationship, the pivot pins 60, 70 and 82 define what is commonly known in the art as a balancing and locking triangle. Accordingly the ventilators 26 are properly balanced and pivotally connected to the operating mechanism to permit convenient opening of the ventilators and subsequent closing of the ventilators against the side members.
The location of pivot pin 60 as illustrated also permits the ventilators 26 to be raised above the horizon or a plane perpendicular to the side members 12 and 14 without the upper edges of the ventilators 26 binding against the side members 12 and 14. Thus it will be apparent that the ventilators themselves may be positioned to serve as deflectors for directing descending cool air into a room equipped with the novel window structure of this invention and to aid removal of hot air from the ceiling area.
It has heretofore been explained that slide plates 68 are vertically adjustable for the purpose of selectively raising or lowering the pivot pins 70. This adjustment is necessitated due to the fact that frequently a selected end of a selected ventilator may not fit tightly against one of the side members because of incorrect installation of the frame 10 or extrusion tolerances varying in the various ventilator and frame forming members. Therefore, the simple and practical method thus utilized in the present invention for maintaining the pivot 70 in a vertically adjusted position expedites the proper alignment of the ventilators to overcome this trouble if and when it arises.
Referring now to Figure 14, it will be seen that clamp screws 66 for securing pintle plates 56 to their respective support arms 62 are readily accessible to a person standing in a room equipped with the window of this application. Consequently, removal of the ventilators can be readily effected by loosening the opposite screws 66 to release the opposed holding dogs 64, then rotating the respective dogs on their pivot pins to free the dogs from their clamp screws 66, and finally removing the resilient Cclips 84 from pivot pins 82 and bowing one or the other of the hinge links 72 outwardly to disassociate it from its associated hinge pin thereby freeing the window at one end so as to permit it to be tilted inwardly toward the interior of the room and withdrawn from its other hinge link 72. It should be noted that this removal process assures a positive support for the ventilator right up to the time that positive action is taken to how one of As a consequence,

It will further be apparent that the window unit of this invention may be properly adjusted for operation at the factory so that installation of the unit on the job may bereadily effected with the ventilators appro priately marked, removed and all linkage turned to a position within the confines of the main framing to guard against accidental damage. Removal of the crank handle will assure that no one will inadvertently expose any linkage for possible damage and removal of the ventilators will positively prevent use of the unit as a ladder or a scaffold board support.
To assure proper journalling and slidability of the various parts all points where metal to metal contact between relatively movable parts occurs are provided with Teflon, nylon or similar self lubricating bushings or slide pads to prevent galling and corrosion of the parts due to electrolytic action. An aWning or-like window assembly comprising a main frame made up solely ofopposed jamb and op.- posed header and sill members defining an unobstructed Window opening; at .leastonerglazcd ventilator unit extendingfromone jamb member to the other jamb member to'close at leasta portion ofthe window opening defined by said irigid main frame; individually releasable hinge means hingedly mounting said glazed ventilator. unit between said jamb members whereby said ventilator unit is readily removable for glazing or cleaning; an actuating means carried by said "frame member in accessible relation to a person at.the interior side of said window assembly for pivoting said ventilator unit around the axis of said hinge means between open and closed positions wherebysaidwindow may be removed to ventilate a room equippedwith said window assembly and to expose said hingemeans for releasing it to permit re-, moval 'and' replacement of said ventilator unit forvassembly of 'saidfr'ame in a building wall and glazing or cleaning of saidfventilator unit, said jamb members being of general channel i'shapediconfiguration with the channel grooves facing towardthe exterior face of the frame and said actuating means comprising respective slide .bars housed by the channel grooves of each jamb member, support brackets individual to each slide bar and adjustably secured tosaid respective jamb members to slidingly support said respective slider bars, a hinge bracket secured to each of'saidslide, barsvand'havingan open sided pintle socket offset toward. theexterior frame, face and'respec tive. fulcrum arms havingends removably pivotally securedto said jamb members in. opposed relationtbelow eachtsaid hinge bracket in a vertieal planetoffset towardlthe interior frame face; said pintletsocket beingtadaptedto cooperatingly pivotally -receive. the .hinge pin, of.a.ventilator unit mounted .hinge means :for supporting said ventilator-for swinging move? ment around ,said pintletsocket axis as a hinge axis and said free ends of .said fulcrumarms being releasably piv-v otably connectedto said ventilatorlunit at a point disposedt'belowsaid pintle when. said ventilator is closed.

An awning or like =window assembly comprising a main frame. made. up solelyof opposed jamb and pposed. header and sillzmembers defining an unobstructed window opening; at leastrone glazed ventilator unit extending from one jamb member to the other jamb membertto closeat least a portion of the'window opening defined -by said rigid main frame; individually-releasable hinge means-hingedly mounting said glazed-ventilator unit betwcen'said jambimembers whereby said ventilator unitis readily;removable:for-glazing or cleaning; an actuating.meanscarriednby said frame member inaccessible relation toarpersongat thev interior side of said window assembly fol-pivoting saidventilator unit around the axis of said'hinge means betweenopen and closed positions whereby said window-may be removed to ventilate a:room.:equipped with-saidwindow assembly and toexpose said hinge means for releasing it to permit'removal and-replacement ofsaid-ventilator unit for assembly of saidiframe ina building wall and glazing or cleaning of saidventilator unit, saidjamb members being'of general channel-shaped configuration in cross-section with thechannel grooves facingtoward' the exterior face of said frame andhavingdnner "opening defining Walls' substantially shorter than"'the:outer channel walls and I each of 'said walls atits fr'ee endb'eing' formed withan' inwardly and. return bent,,'longitudinally directed' flange. element and withithe base wall having a pair of longitudinally extending rib formations thereon. disposed in topposed relation to the respective flange formations to coopferate.therewith' and form opposed socket grooves along the inner face of "each sidetwalllfor respectively receiving inner and'outer, corner. connecting brackets for rigidly joining said'sideframe members to saidlheader-member and said sill'memb'er.

The window assembly of claim 2 wherein said support 'hracketsextend betweenlsaidopposed socket grooves and have end formations extending into said grooves and clamptscrews threaded through said brackets with their ends disposed to' abut the jambwall between said grooves and. force said, brackets bodily, toward'the respectivegroove defining flange, elementsand'rib formations to frictionally' lock'jsaid brackets'at a.selected point along said ja'mb.

The window assemblyof claim 2 whereinth'e said individually releasable hinge means includes fulcrumt arms removably, pivotally securedto said jamb members by securingscrews carried by thetbasewall of.said jambs, pintle. plates slidinglyt movable longitudinally of said jambst and' having screw receiving slots. therebetween and nut elements disposed in -overlying relation .to the slotsrinsaidpintle: platestbetween said.respective groovedefining flange elementsaand rib formationssovas to frictionallyclamp said pintle plates between said jamb base walls and said 'nut elements.

Atrawningor like window assembly comprisinga. main frame made up solely-ofuopposedvjamb and op posed header and sillmemberstdefining an unobstructed window opening; at vleast one glazed ventilator unit extending from one jamb membertolhe-other jamb member to close at least a .portionofrth'e window opening defined by, said rigidmain frame; individually releasablev hinge means hingedly mounting said glazed ventilator unit between said jamb members whereby said ventilatorunit is readily, remoyableior. glazing or cleaning; an actuating means carried by said frame member in acces-- sible relation. to; a person at.the interior side of said window assemblyforpivotingsaid ventilator unit around, thetaxis of. said hinge meansbetween open. and closed positions whereby said lwindowmay beremoved to'-ven:-

In an awning type Window having-a .frame and a swinging ventilatorz. actuating meehanism comprising hinge, links pivotally; connecting: the ventilator: to". the frame; vertically adisposed-slidebars: slidably -carried:.by' the frame; means removably-andpivotally connecting the ventilator, to.v the slide. bars; and r operator means: opera-i tively connected-to. the vslide-ibars v fortt impartinggslidings-i movement to the latter, said first named means including rigid arms fixed to and projecting said slide bars and terminating at their outer ends'in bifurcated end portions, pivot pins received in said bifurcated end portions for removably pivotally connecting said ventilator to said arms in offset relation from the longitudinal axes of said slide bars, plates fixed to said ventilator and supporting said pivot pins, and holding dogs pivotally supported on said pins and having portions thereof engageable with a part of said arms to retain said pivot pins operatively in said bifurcated end portions.

A window assembly comprising a frame including a pair of vertical side members, a header connected to the upper ends of said side members and a sill connected to the lower ends of said side members, said side members, said header and said sill each having a pair of opposed socket grooves extending throughout their lengths, each of said side, header and sill members having a. web member extending transversely of the plane of the window opening and carrying along its opposite marginal I edges parallel flanges and means spaced outwardly from the face of said web remote from said window opening ends of the opposed socket grooves of said side members and said sill at each end of said sill; respective slide bars carried by said side members for vertical sliding movement; a ventilator having its upper corners pivotally at tached to said slide bars for swinging movement with respect thereto; anchor plates slidably adjustably posi-' tioned in the opposed socket grooves of said respective side members; link means individual to each slide bar having their lower ends respectively pivotally attached to said anchor plates and their upper ends respectively pivoted adjacent the upper corners qfis'aid ventilator.

In an awning window assembly a main frame comprising a pair of opposed jamb members, a header member and a sill member each of which comprises a channel member and includes a wall extending transversely of the plane of the window opening and carrying along its opposite marginal edges parallel flanges and means spaced from the face of said wall remote from the center of said frame and forming laterally opposed socket grooves intersecting each other at the mitered ends and opening on the side of said members remote from the center of said frame; corner joiner members in the form of angleirons having their respective legs drive fitted into the respective intersecting socket grooves at each corner to rigidly secure said header and sill to said opposed jambs in a manner to provide an unobstructed window opening; ventilatoractuating means disposed in the chan nels of said jambs and including slideibar guides adjustably positioned in the socket grooves of said jambs; a plurality of ventilator units removably pivotally connected to said actuating means at opposed vertically spaced points; respective pairs of fulcrum arms individual to each ventilator unit each having one end removably connected to the opposite end of its respective'ventilator unit; and anchor means respectively connecting each of the free fulcrum arm ends to said jambs whereby said plurality of ventilator units will be fixedly located longitudinally of said jambs for bodily in and out swinging movement in accordance with the operation of said actuating means to close or progressively open said window opening to control the ventilation through said unobstructed window and expose said removable connections for access to a person desiring to remove said ventilators for cleaning or glazing.
9. An awning window assembly according to claim 8 wherein said actuating means includes a torque bar extending transversely along the sill and fixedly connected adjacent its opposite ends to torque arms disposed within outwardly away from.
. 10- the channel openings of said jambs, respective slide bars guidedfor longitudinal movement in said channel openings, pitman links connecting said respective torque arms to said respective slide bars and a geared'operating mechanism mounted in the channel opening of one of said jambs and having a wormgear non-rotatably secured to the adjacent torque bar end and worm pinion and shaft having a free shaft end extending through the web of said one jamb and removably mounting an operating crank.
10. In an awning window assembly, a main frame comprising generally channel-shaped laterally spaced jambs,
a header and a sill each having mitered ends disposed in respective abutting relation and longitudinally extending, laterally opposed socket grooves intersecting each other at the mitered ends; corner joiner members in the form of angle irons having their respective legs drive fitted into the respective intersecting socket grooves at each corner to rigidly secure said header and sill to the respective opposed ends of said jambs in a manner to provide-an unobstructed window opening; ventilator actuating means disposed in the channels of said jambs; a plurality of ventilator units removably pivotally connected at laterally opposed corners to said actuating means at laterally opposed vertically spaced points; respective pairs of fulcrum arms individual to each ventilator unit and each having one end removably pivotally connected to the opposite lateral ends of its respective ventilator unit; anchor means respectively pivotally connecting each of the other fulcrum arm ends to said jambs whereby said plurality of ventilator units will be fixedly located longitudinally of said jambs for bodily in and of said actuating means to close or progressively open said window opening to control the ventilation through said otherwise unobstructed window opening and expose said removable pivotal connections for access to a person desiring to bodily remove said ventilator units for cleaning' or glazing, said actuating means including a torque bar extending transversely along the sill channel opening and fixedly connected adjacent its opposite ends to respective torque arms disposed in closed position of said ventilator units within the channel openings of said jambs, respective slide bars guided for longitudinal movement in said jamb channel openings, pitman links connecting the free ends of said respective torque arms to said respective slide bars, and a geared operating mechanism mounted in the channel opening of one of said jambs at the adjacent end of said torque bar and having a worm gear non-rotatably secured to said adjacent torque bar end, and a-worm pinion and shaft having a free shaft end extending through the interior face web of said one jamb and removably mounting an operating crank; the guides of said slide bars comprise two or more sectional lengths ofan extrusion having a laterally extending mounting section of minimum thickness adapted for sliding connec tion along the inner face of one of the opposed walls of said jambs, a thickened guide section apertured at right angles to the opposite cut off ends of said sectional lengths to form a slide bar guide opening and screw means acting between a portion of said mounting section and said inner wall face to secure said slide bar guide in place along said jamb.

An awning window assembly according to claim 10 wherein said inner jamb wall is provided with integral, overhanging, laterally opposed, flange-like formations cooperating with said inner wall surface to form opposed socket grooves, the opposite edges of said mounting section are formed for mating sliding engagement in said opposed socket grooves and said screw means comprises:

a header'and a sill each having mitered. ends disposed other at the mitered ends; corner joiner members in the form'of' angle irons having their respective legsdrive fitted into the respective intersecting socket grooves. at each corner to rigidly secure said header and'sill to the respective opposedends of said jambs in a manner to provide an unobstructed window opening; ventilator ac-' tuating: means disposed in the channels of said jambs; a plurality of ventilator units removably pivotally-connected at laterally opposed corners to said actuating means at laterally opposed vertically spaced points; respective pairs of fulcrum arms individual to each ventilatorunit and each having one end removably pivotally connected to the opposite lateral ends of its respective ventilator "unit; anchor means respectively pivotally conmeeting each of the other fulcrum arm ends to saidrjambs whereby said plurality of ventilator units will befixedly located longitudinally of said jambs for bodily in and out swinging movement in accordance with the operation ofsaid-actuating means to close or progressively open said window opening ,to control the ventilation through said otherwise unobstructed window opening and expose saidremovable pivotal connections for access to a person desiring'tobodily remove saidventilator units.for clean,- irig'orglazing; saidvventilator units comprising opposed, end'frame members and top and bottomframe members having; mitered ends disposed in abutting relation and longitudinally extending, laterally opposedsocket grooves formed along the peripherally outwardly exposed faces,
and intersecting each other at the miteredlends, corner joiner members in the form of angle irons having their respective'legs" drive fitted into the respective intersecting socket groovesat each corner to rigidly secure said top andfbottom frame members to said end frame members; and' said removable pivotal connectionto said actuating; means comprises a pintle plate associated with each end' framemember and'having a supporting section slidably dis'posedirr said opposed socket grooves of said ventilator end frame members, a pintle mounting section extending outwardly from said supporting section between said opposed socket grooves and lying in a plane parallel to the-plane ofsaid supporting section, a pintle protruding from-said pintle mounting section and having anenlarged h' 'ead at its-outer free end, a locking plate pivotallycarried bysaid pintle adjacent said pintle mounting, section and, having an arcuate groove therein, set screws for frictionally' locking said pintle plate in position along said. end frame members and a clamp screw having a shank threaded into said actuating means in positionzto cooperate with said arcuate groove and a headadaptedlto clampingly overlap the locking plate at the sides ofsaid arcuate groove to frictionally secure said locking plate to said actuating'means with said pintle in journalling relation.
