A CORPORATION.
TRAVELlNG-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,170, dated April 26, 1904. Application iled December-17, 1903. Serial No. 185,510. (No model.)
To `@ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, 1WILLIAIII D. CHASE, a vcitizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State 5 of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in traveling-cases, and more particularly in that type of traveling-cases commonly known on the market as dress-suit cases.
The object of my invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character, and thereby provide a case or 1 5 box which Will possess great rigidity, strength,
and durability and Which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost. With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of IO construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out inV rthe appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 5 a perspective view of a dress-suit case con- O the same, the cover being in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken through the beveled upper edge of the body of the case. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of one corner of the body of Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view through the same.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l denotes a dress-suit case of the usualform, comprising a rectangular body or box 2having O an open top or face adapted to be closed by a hinged cover or lid 3. AThe sides 4 and ends 5 of the said body 2 are, as shown, constructed ofouter and inner layers or thicknesses 6 and 7 of sheet material, preferably pasteboard or 5 jute-pulp board, between which, adjacent to their upper edges, is interposed an intermediate layer 8 of material, preferably sheet metal, such as tin. The metal sheet 8 and the above the upper edge of the outer pasteboard sheet 6 and are bent inwardly, as at 9, to form a surrounding beveled edge l0 for the open top or face of the body 2. The extreme edges of said sheets 8 and 7 are folded or doubled together, as shown at 11, to form a strengthening rib or bead for the said beveled portion l0 and also to provide a linished edge for the same. The sheet of metal S may extend down to any desired extent between the inner and outer pasteboard sheets, and the said three sheets or layers of material may be secured together in any suitable manner. It Will be seen that the said sheet of metal forms an exceedingly durable and.. rigid rim for the open top or face of thebody and that the downturned edges 12 of the hinged cover or lid 3 will rest securely and tightly upon said beveled rim to provide a simplel and effective closure for the case.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, the manner of using, and the many advantages of my invention will be readily understood, and a further explanation is therefore deemed unnecessary.
While I have described my invention as applied to a dress-suit case, I wish it understood that I do notlimit myself to this application, since the closure may be used upon various boxes, receptacles, and the like. Furthermore, it will be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted posed of inner and outer layers of sheet material, the upper edge ofthe outer layer forming a rim or support forthe edge of a cover to rest upon, the upper edge of the inner layer extending above said rim and bent inl inner sheet 'Z of pulp or pasteboard project 16 fold of the said beveled portion of the inner layer and having its free edge bent up between the oblique portion and fold, thus interlocking therewith toform a stiened edge, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM D. CHASE.
