ATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN A. MEYERCORD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MULTIPLE-GRIP FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,944, dated April 19, 1904:.
Application filed Iuly 12, 1901.
To roZZ whom it ntrty concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN A. HEY nnoonn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of (Jhicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lilultiple-Grip Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and
to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a clip or fastener of wire or the like adapted for use in securing together individual sheets of paper or other material and which when secured upon the sheets applies pressure thereon at a plurality of points on each side of the clip, thereby acting to hold the paper more rigidly from being withdrawn from the clip and preventing the rollingor misplacing of a sheet. In addition thereto means are provided for rigidly securing the clip in position from lateral displacement. Heretofore many different devices for the purpose specified have been constructed, most of which have been objectionable owing to the imperfect hold of the clip on the paper.
My invention provides cheap, simple, and effective means for rigidly holding a plurality of sheets in a desired relation.
The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described, and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a clip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing its application to a plurality of sheets of paper.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of another form of my invention. Fig. 4: is a similar view of a clip having an integral pin connected therewith and resembling one of the halves of the device shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. &, but showing the pin formed on the transverse bar. plied to a plurality of sheets of paper, the pin rigidly holding the same from displacement.
As shown in said drawings, the clip is constructed of spring-wire or other resilient material bent intermediate of its ends to form a relatively straight transverse port-ion or bar Fig. 6 shows the same ap.
Serial No. 67,978. (No model.)
A, lateral converging bars a a oblique to the bar A, and the clam ping ends or bars a (0 which are connected integrally with the inwardly-directed ends of the side bars a a, as shown, by outwardly-turned bends and which extend across said side bars and the transverse bar A at approximately a right angle with the latter, each affording points of binding contact with the sheets at the said points of intersection. One
of said end portions, as shown a, is sharpened at its extremity and is of sufficient length to provide a pin designed to be secured in the sheets of paper or other material to which. the clip is applied. In the form illustrated in Fig. 3 the end portions 0 (t are bent back 5 and forward across the transverse bar A and the side bar a a plurality of times in approximately parallel folds, each of said folds or bends providing points for binding contact on each of said bars and acting to more efficiently 7 grip the paper in position.
A clip constructed in accordance with my invention manifestly admits of being cut in halves through the transverse bar A, thereby forming of each half a separate and independent clip, as illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, and which when in position on the sheet affords a plurality of points of binding contact therewith together with a pin. In Figs. 5 and 6 the severed end of the transverse barAforms the pin, and when in position, as shown in Fig. 6, the various parallel folds of the end a form parallel binding contacts on the pin A and side bar a and act, together with the pin, to rigidly secure together the leaves or 5 sheets, and there is also provided a bend or fold at (6 which incloses a part of the margin of the sheets and acts to hold said margins from separating or rolling.
The operation of my device is as follows: 9 A plurality of sheets being secured in any of the forms of clips illustrated, the bindingwires or ends in each instance engage the sheet against other portions of the clip at a plurality of points of contact, thus greatly increasing the surface of contact and also very greatly increasing the holding effect. When the pin is secured in the paper, a further advantage is gained in that the clip is thus rigidly secured on the papers and acts to permanently I00 2. A clip-fastener comprising a reversely- I curved Wire or rod forming a bottom and a side bar and having one end thereof turned over across itself and the bottom and affording binding contact with each at a plurality of points.
8. A wire-clip fastener embracing a bottom bar, integral converging side bars and approximately parallel binding-bars having contact each with a side bar and the bottom bar at a plurality of points.
I. A clip-fastener comprising a reverselycurved wire having a straight end portion bent over and engaging at a plurality of points on the remaining portion of the wire, said straight portion being sharpened and forming an integral pin.
5. In a fastener, a wire bent intermediate of its ends to form a transverse bottom bar and converging side bars, the end portions of said Wire at said converging ends of the side bars being turned reversely and bent to afford a plurality of parallel binding portions engaging at a plurality of points on said side bars and bottom bar, one of said ends being sharpened and forming a pin.
6. A pin embracing a wire sharpened at one end and bent at the other reversely and providing a V- shaped bend of wire extending transversely across and contacting with a plurality of approximately parallel binding-bars.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
