PATENT OFFICE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,644, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed December 15, 1903. Serial No. 185,291. (No model.) I
To 0. whom it may concern:
Be it known that IjGnonec S. ANDRns, a citizen of the United States of America. residing at Globe, in the county of Gila, Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in monkey-wrenches and pipe-wrenches in which the lower part of the adjusting-screw which actuates the movable jaw is made with a coneshaped base movable along the shank of the wrench and engaging in a concave ratchet or rack cut in the shank. The enlarged base may be placed above or below the knurled head of the screw.
The object of my improvement is to provide a method for easily and instantaneously opening and closing the jaws of the wrench. I at tain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation-of the wrench with all the parts assembled. Fig. 2 is a side view of the shank, showing the ratchet or rack. Fig. 3 is a front view of theshank, showing the concavity of the ratchet. Fig. 4: is a view through the lines 1 2 and 3 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side view of the movablejaw. Fig. 6 is a top view of the movable jaw. Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the movable jaw. Fig. 8 is a view of the adjusting-screw with the coneshaped base. Fig. 9 is a side view of the spring which holds the adjusting-screw in contact with the shank. Fig. 10 is a front view of Fig. 9.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The movable jaw Z slides along the shank a, the conical base of .the adjusting-screw 0 enadj usting-screw '0.
gaging with the ratchet of the shank (4, thus forming a shifting base for the screw 0, the screw being held in the desirednotch of the ratchet by the tension of the spring d, which is fastened to the jaw b. To close the jaws, it
is only necessary to push upon the base of the A slight turn of the screw causes the jaws to grip any object firmly. To open the jaws, pull the screw 0 out of the ratchet against the tension of the spring d, when the movable jaw and screw can be moved back to any desired point.
The illustrations show only smooth face jaws; but by using jaws with toothed or serrated faces the device becomes applicable for pipe or rods.
I am aware that smooth and rough or serrated faces to the jaws of wrenches have been in use for many years. I therefore do not claim any improvement on them.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench consisting of a jaw and shank, the shank having a concave ratchet-face; a sliding jaw thereon; an adjusting-screw with a coneshaped base having a threaded engagement with. the sliding jaw, the cone-shaped base being adapted to engage the concave shankratchet; a spring tending to press the sliding jaw toward the shank and engage the coneshaped base with the ratchet substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE S. ANDRUS.
Witnesses: I
