(EO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
Be it known that I, G. G. TOWNSEN'D, of Rochester, in the county of 'Monroe, and 'State of New York,
have invented new and useful Shoe-Knife Guurdg endl do hereby declre that the following is full, elegir,V

Tlie nature of this invention consists in the employment of Aen adjustable skeleton-guard, which mgty be appliedto any Ordinary trimming-knife for dressing the upper edge of boot and shoe-soles next ltothe uppers.
To enable others to make and use my inventioml will describe its construction und operation.
The guard is composed of the framef, halving the shank s and the spur g, which acts as a. guide end guard to the cutting-point of `the knife. The Outer face of this spur is mede slightly oval.. as shown aft a, iig. 2, and is provided On'the opposite or inner fece with a. shallow V-sliaped groove tO receive the bevelled end of the blade B of theknife.l The encirolingbar Z, shown mostly by dott/ed lines in fig. 1, is cast to the frgirnej by offsets, as shown at d,g. 2. The back bur ot the frame is thickened, and also Offset, as, shown,'in order that the ploints ofjhe clamping-screw s', which is tapped through this enr or Offset z, shall strike the-buck of the blade. This drives the end, which is cut O obliquely, "of, the blade at e ririnly into the V-shup'ed groevez andfthoroughly attaches it to the knife-blnde B. i n
The gunrdsrmaybe runde of steel, or ol malleable iron, and case-lnirdened, rendering them very durable, and by making' them of proper size to be applicable toA a wide or n. narrow blade, olrl worn blu-des muy be convertedinto goed trimming-knives by the application of. thelgunrd. l l 'I The great liability of cutting the uppers` of boo-ts `and' shoes by the mukers, with the Ordinary trimmingknives, is too well understood to require any explanation; but, by the employment Of tl1s ,gua.rd, that serious difficulty is entirely obviutedyund in an entirely perfect manner, as regards that part of the work.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Putent'of the United Stutes,- is- -The Skeletonmuard G for shoeinatkersZ trimminknives,'consistin of the li shank s, fra'me efldl a d g p g encircling-bur b, in cmbinationwith the binding-screw s, substantially in the mzlnner and for the .purposes set forth. i' I G. G. TOWNSEND. Witnesses: Y i
