COMBINED-UNDIERWAIST AND GNIENT-SUPORTER. A l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettere Patent Ne. 752,343, dated February 1e, 1904.' j' Application filed June l, 1903. Serial No. 159,437.. (No model.)
To all whom it' may @n/cern:
Be it known that I, Lors M. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at VGrrand Rapids, in the county ofKent and State of i 5V Michigan, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in a Combined Underwaist and Garment-Supporter;l andI do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and eX- act` description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to improvements in a combined underwaist and garment-supporter; and its object is to provide au uiiderwaist of I5 elastic material with suitable means for Y attaching andsupporting the outer garments 'and sanitary appliance, whereby the weightv of the articles so supported will be sustained by and upon the shoulders of the wearer; to provide a device, as aforesaichthat Vwill not interfere with the free movement of the wearer and that will not in any way-restrict the action of the muscles and internal organs of the wearer, and to provide the device `withcertain 2 5 new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. My invention consists, essentially, of abody garment or underwaist of suitable form and of freely-yielding material, preferably of a knit fabric, and various tapes vor straps of substantially longitudinally inelastic or unyielding material extending in loops over the shoulders and thence downwardly and rearward thereon and secured thereto,` and various means for attaching the various outer and nether garments and sanitaryl appliance to said tapes-.or straps, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings,- in which- Figure lis a front view of a device embodying my invention arranged as worn; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3, an eX- terior view of the entire structure opened out at or in lplan view, and Figs. a and 5 details ofthe skirt-support and sliirtwaist-holder. Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures. Y -A represents an underwaist or body -garf ment of any suitable freely-yielding material,
preferably some suitable knit fabric, and fitting the body of the wearer closely and-yielding freely to any movement thereof.
-. B, C, D, E, F, and Gr represent various strips offleXible and longitudinally unyielding ma- 5 5 terial, preferably consisting of suitable ttapes' kor strips of woven fabric and secured to the garment A by sewing the edges of the f said tapes thereto., The-tapes B extend close to each other and vertically upon the lowerpar't 6 0 of the middle back portion, and thence up. ward and diverging away from each other exe tend over the shoulders and downward .upon
, the front, converging somewhat towardeaclr other, as shown, and secured .to the garment throughout on the back and on the front down to a little below the waist-line, as at Bl and thence detached and prolonged downward any convenient-distance, as at B". At B another tape C is attached by one end only andl 4 eXf 793 tends downward substantially the sameqdisi tance as the tape' B. Attached to .the out.- waIdly-curved back portionsv of the, tapes B and extending downward at each side thereof are two other tapes F F, which are securedto the' back of the garment down toF, andthence are detached and extend downward, as rat F'f.' To 4these extended portions C, B, and Fi may be attached by buckles, safety-pins, ory ,other suitable fastenings any suitable hosefsupport .8O ers and sanitary/appliance, (not sliown,).whic.h will thusbe supported from the shoulders of the wearer by means of the tapes B.. .f
If preferred, the tapes FInaybe omitted and lthe tapes, B prolonged downward instead; but the construction shown is preferable and more substantial; 2 f. .a
D D arev other tapes extending upgthe back near each side thereof, and diverging Voutward toward the top also extend over-the shoulders and thence down the front -ay short distance l and converging inwardto the point D', whence they are turned abruptly to a horizontal direc# horizontally and opposite the tapes D connects the tapes B B and is also left full or slack in like manner and for the same purpose as are the portions D. Under each armopening and extending diagonally from thev upper part of the tapes B to the lower back part of the tapes D are tapes E, which, together with the tape D, serve to constitute loops extending over the shoulders and to the bottom of the garment at each side of the back thereof. The tapes B also constitute suspend.- ing-loops extending over the shoulders, and are also inclined backward and downward, whereby they tend to draw the shoulders backward, thus acting as shoulder-braces as well. All of these tapes serve to retain the shape of the undergar'ment and at the same time have a limited relative movement due to the elasticity of the said garment. Attached to these several tapes at or near the waist-line are buttons K, which serve to attach skirts or other garments.
vFor a support to the kouter skirt and to engage and hold a shirt-waist detachable studs J J are provided, which studs are mounted on the respective ends of a plate I of suitable rigid materiaL, preferably Celluloid or metal, and this plate is detachably secured tothe tapesB at or near the middle of the back by means of va suitable pocket or receptacle H,A
within which the plate I is inserted with its respective ends projecting oppositely therefrom and the studs J projecting outward. Whenever the garment is to be washed, this plate is readily detached by withdrawing it endwi'se from the pocket, and when-in use the studs retain it inplace therein.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f l. The combination of an elastic underwaist,
thereto and extending vertically and near each other at the lower back portion of the waist, thence-diverging outward and extending over thershoulders, and thence downward on the front, garment-supporting means attached to said tapes, a plate detachably secured to the middle back portion of said tapes, .and outwardly-projecting studs on the respective ends of said plate. i
3. The combination of an elastic under-waist,
longitudinally unyielding tapes attached thereto and extending in, divergir'ig curved lines from the middle of the Vback and over the shoulders and thence downward on the front side, garment-supporting means attach ed to said tapes, a pocket attached ,to said tapes near the middle back portion of the garment, a plate detachably inserted in the pocket and oppositely projecting therefrom, and rearwardly-projecting studs mounted on the respective ends'of said plate.
4:. The combination of an elastic underwaist, longitudinally unyielding tapes secured thereto and extending'in diverging lines from the 'middle back portion over the shoulders and thence downward on the front side thereof, and extended below the waist at the front, tapes attached to the diverging rear portions of said first-named tapes and thence extending downward below the waist at the rear, garment-supporting means attached to said tapes near the waist-line, a pocket attached to said Erst-named tapes near the middle back portion of the waist, a plate inserted in the pocket and projecting therefrom at each end, and
studs on the respective ends of said plate and projecting rearward therefrom.
5. The combination of an elastic underwaist, longitudinally unyielding tapes secured thereto, and extending upward at the middle of the back and thence diverging and extending over the shoulders, and thence downward, and prolonged below the waist at the front, like tapes attached to the diverging backportions ofthe same and extending below the waist at the rear, like tapes extendingupward on the side portion of the back, and thence over the shoulders and in downward converging lines on the front and thence turned at obtuse angles and extending horizontally across the front, a horizontal tape connecting the diverging rear portions of the first-named tapes, said horizontal tapes all being longitudinally slack or full to permit limited expansion of the waist, and garment-supporting means attached to the vertical tapes near the waist-line.
6. The combination of an elastic underwaist, longitudinally unyielding tapes attached thereto, and extending `in curved diverging lines from the middle back portion over the shoulders, thence downward on the front, other like tapes extending upward and outward in curved lines along the side portions of the back and over the shoulders, and thence downward and horizontally across the front, tapes extending diagonally beneath the armholes and connecting the front and rear tapes, and garment-supporting means attached to the tapes near the waist-line. Y
7. In combination with an elastic underwaist, tapes attached thereto, and extending over the shoulder andl downwardly at the front and rear thereof, garment-supporting means attached to said tapes near the waistline, aA pocket attached to said tapes near the IZO sides of the back in diverging lines and over" the shoulders and thence downward and inward on the front and thence turned at an obtuse angle and extended lloosely across the front, two other tapes attached to the diverging back portions of the rst-named tapes and thence extending downward below the waist, two tapes extending diagonally beneath the armholes and connecting thefront and rear Y tapes, garment-supporting means attached to the tapes near the waistline, a pocket atl tached to the middle back portion of the firstnamed tapes, a plate detachably inserted in the pocket and projecting therefrom at each end, and studs on the ends of said plate and projecting rearward therefrom. Y In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
