COMBINED SKIRT AND UNDERGARMENT ADJUSTER AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 775,305, dated November 22, 1904. Application filed July 10, 1903. Serial No. 164,978. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCES ELIZABETH MOODY, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Skirt and Undergarment Adjuster and Hose-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combined skirt and undergarment adjusters and hose-supporters; and the objects of my invention are to produce a device by means of which a persons skirts and undergarments may be held in the proper position, and a simple contrivance'combined therewith for sup porting the hose of the wearer, and further objects being to provide for securing the device rigidly to the corsets; and it consists, essentially, of a metal plate having downwardlyextending hooks formed on the front thereof and a pair of hinged upwardly-extending pins secured to the rear thereof, a slot below said pins, a suitable tagof flexible material secured in said slot and provided with fastening means, and a pair of hose-supporters of ordinary construction secured to the tag at their upper extremities in the said slot by stitching or any other suitable means, the various parts being constructed and arranged in detail, as hereinafter more particularly explained.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the same looking at the back. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken from the center thereof.

In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts ineach figure.

A is the body of the device and consists of a plate formed, preferably, of sheet metal having the hooked upper portion a and an enlarged hook a formed in the lower or central portion thereof, said hooks extending downwardly, as shown. A slot (4 is formed transversely in the lower portion of the plate A, and part of the metal stamped out of the plate to form the said slot is turned over to form the hinge a.

B represents pins integrally connected together by a horizontal portion which extends through the hinge a. The pins B extend upwardly toward the upper portion of the plate A.

C is a tag or loop which may be made of tape or any other suitable material. This tag is passed through the slot (1 as shown in the drawings, and is provided with a pin 0 or a similar fastening device, the object of this part being hereinafter described.

D .l) are two hose-supporters consisting of strips of ribbon, tape, or thelike having fastening devices at their lower extremities adapted to be attached to the upper portion of the hose. The upper ends of the ribbons are passed through the slot (1 and stitched to both portions of the tag C, as shown at 5, Fig. 2, so as to secure them rigidly in position.

Having now described the construction of my invention, 1 will proceed to point out the manner of using the same.

The hook a is adapted to pass over the upper edges of the undergarments of the wearer. The upper hook a is intended to pass over the overskirt, and it may here be mentioned, as will be readily understood, that the side of the device shown in Fig. l is the front, so that the overskirt will hide all parts of the device except the hook (I, and this portion will be covered by the waist-belt or the waistbuckle, so that nothing will be in sight to give the clothes of the wearer an unsightly appearance.

The device is held in position rigidly by means of the upwardlyextcnding pins B, which are inserted into the cloth of the corset and by means of which the device is prevented from slipping upwardly, and a further securing device is provided in the tag C and pins 0, which are secured to the cloth of the corset.

The hose-supporters, which are conveniently secured to the device, are used in the usual manner.

It will now be seen that I have invented an extremely cheap and simple combined device for securing the upper edges of a persons skirts in position and for supporting the hose of the wearer.

I am aware that it is not new to use a skirtadjuster having two hooks on the front face and pins on the back thereof; but the device which I have employed having the slot located below the lower hook and adapted to receive the tag C and also the upper ends of the hose-supporters is new, and, further, the combined device, which may be employed for both purposes, is also new and useful.

It is to be understood that in placing my invention upon the market I do not wish to be limited to the identical details of construction, as indicated in the drawings and set forth in the specification, for certain changes might be made in the device without departing from the spirit of my invention. For example, I might mention that the device could be employed as a skirt-adjuster alone without the hosesupporting attachments, although these are in themselves an extremely important addition. I might also provide various forms of securing means for fastening the hose-supporters and the tag to the body of the device, though the form of supporting means shown is the one which I consider preferable.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body portion consisting of a plate having upper and lower hooks to engage the outer and inner skirts respectively and a pivoted pin extending upwardly and adapted to engage the cloth of the corsets, of a tag secured to the body portion and having means thereon for attaching the same to the lower portion of the corset, and a pair of hosesupporters secured to the body portion by suitable means as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a device of the class described, the combination with the body portion consisting of a plate having upper and lower hooks extending forwardly and downwardly on the front thereof, and a pivoted pin extending upwardly to the rear of the body portion, of a pair of hose-supporters suitably secured to the body portion as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a device of the class described, a body portion comprising a plate having upper and lower forwardly and downwardly extending hooks to engage the outer and inner skirts respectively, a pair of hinged upwardly-extending pins having an integral lower crosspiece, said plate having a slot in the lower portion thereof, the metal stamped out of said slot being bent up to form the hinge for said pins as shown and described.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a body portion comprising a plate having upper and lower hooks to engage the outer and inner skirts respectively, and a pivot-pin extending upwardly and adapted to engage the cloth of the corset, of a tag secured to the lower end of the body portion and having means for attaching the same to the corsets as and for the purpose specified.

5. The combination with a central metallic plate, of the two hose-supporting straps secured thereto, a third central dependent strap, skirt-en gaging means carried by the said plate, and means for securing said plate upon the body of the wearer.
