Description

No. 750,989. PATENTED FEB. 2, 1904. H. e. MAGWILLIAM.
SUSPENDERS.
APPLIUATION FILED MAY 23. 1902.
HOMODEL.
I Q/JZAM/ 1M UNITED STATES Patented February 2,1904.
PATENT OF I E.
'SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 50,989, dated February 2, 1904.
Application filed May '23, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH G. MACWILLIAM, residing at New Rochelle, in the county of \Nestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in suspenders, and has for its object to provide a sliding web or strap connection between the shoulder-straps and the rear of the wearers trousers which will allow the shoulder-straps and trousers-tabs great freedom and independence of play under the varying strains caused by the movements of the wearers body and in which means are provided for counteracting the tendency of the webs or straps to turn the loops through which they pass.
To that end my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of the back of a pair of suspenders embodying my invention, so much only of the shoulderstraps being shown as isnecessary to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention.
As shown in the drawings, the shoulderstraps A and A are independent of each other and are provided at their rear ends with links 2 and 8, respectively, to which are secured the ends of the connecting-straps 4L and 5, respectively. The strap 4 passes from such point of connection downwardly to and is threaded through the upper loop 6 of the adjacent link B and thence extends upwardly to the link 3 upon the other shoulder-strap, to which or to the connecting-strap 5 near its point of attachment to the link the strap 4 is secured by suitable means, such as the stitching 17. The other connecting-strap 5 passes similarly to and through the upper loop 7 of the link B and thence upwardly to the link 2, to which or to the connecting-strap 1 near its point of attachment to the link the strap 5 is secured by suitable means, such as the stitching 18.
The links B and B comprise each an upper and lower loop, suitably connected. In the Serial No 108,642. (No model.)
drawings the upper and lower loops of the link B are numbered 6 and 11, respectively, and the upper and lower loops of the link B are numbered 7 and 12, respectively. These loops may be made and connected in any suitable way. In Fig. 1 of the drawings they are shown made of-wire and connected by sleeves 9 and 10. In Fig. 2 of the drawings the links are made of stampings of sheet metal. The links B and B may be entirely separate from and independent of each other, as shown in Fig. 2, or they may be laterally interconnected, as shown in Fig. 1, by suitable means, such as the link 8, which forms a sort of universal joint, allowing the links freedom of play in every direction.
Threaded through the lower loops 11 and 12, respectively, of the links B and B are the trousers tabs 13 and 14, respectively, each strap having at one end suitable means, such as the eye 15, for attachment to the rear of the trousers and being secured at the other end to the other trousers-tab by stitching 16 or other suitable means.
In order to prevent the tendency of the connecting-straps and trousers-tabs to twist the links B and B into a plane transverse to the back of the wearers body, the connectingstrap 4: and the adjacent trousers-tab 13 are threaded through the loops 6 and 11 of the link B in opposite directionsthat is to say, if the connecting-strap 4: is threaded through the upper loop 6 fromfront to rear, as shown in the drawings, the adjacent trousers-tab 13 will be threaded through the lower loop 11 from rear to front, and vice versa. The connecting-strap 5 and the adjacent trousers-tab 14 are similarly threaded through the loops 7 and 12 in opposite directions. It will be seen that by this method of threading the straps the tendency of the connecting-straps to twist the links in one direction will be counteracted by the tendency of the trousers-tabs to twist the links in the opposite direction, so that the connecting-straps and trousers-tabs will lie flat. It will also be observed that by having the links B and B either entirely independent of one another, as shown in Fig. 2, or loosely linked or pivoted together, as shown in Fig. 1, the equalizing of the strain upon the shoulder-straps and tabs is accomplished not only by the sliding of the webs, but also by the play of the links relatively to one another.
While I prefer to construct my improved suspenders in the manner shown in the drawings, various modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle of the invention, the scope of which is defined in the claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pair of suspenders comprising shoulder-straps, a pair of flat straps interconnected to form trousers-tabs, a pair of relatively movable links runningly supporting said straps, and a pair of flat straps connecting the rear ends of the shoulder-straps and having, inferlmediately, running engagement with said 2. A pair of suspenders comprising shoulder-straps, a pair of flat interconnected trousers-tabs, a pair of loosely-connected links slidably supporting said tabs, a pair of flat straps connecting the rear ends of the shoulderstraps, one of said connecting-straps having, intermediately, running engagement with the link supporting one trousers tab, and the other connecting-strap having similar running engagement with the link supporting the other trousers-tab.
3. A pair of suspenders comprising shoulder-straps, trousers-tabs, a pair of independent relatively movable links connecting said tabs, and a pair of flat straps connecting the rear ends of the shoulder-straps and having, intermediately, running engagement with said links.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH G. MACWILLIAM. Witnesses:
H. S. JOHNSON, EMILY EASTMAN.
