OORA CLEGG, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED TOY CRADLE ANDSAV lNGS-BANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 747,941, dated December 29, 1903.
' Application filed April 19, 1902. Serial No. 103,767. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORA OLEGG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, county of Dane, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Toy Cradle and Savings-Bank, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined toy cradle and savings-bank.
The object ofmy invention is to provide a toy savings-bank for the reception of charitable contributions fordependent children, of such construction that when located in a public place it will attract attention and recall to mind the dependent condition of infant children for which contributions are solicited.
The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section drawn on line 00 as of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a transverse section drawn on line y y of Fig. 1.
Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters in both views.
The cradle proper comprises the end pieces A and B, side pieces 0 0, bottom piece D, and rockers E and F.
G is a cover which is secured at its edges to the side and end pieces of the cradle par-' allel with the bottom and a slight distance therefrom, whereby an inclosure H is formed which serves as a receptacle for coin. The cover G is provided with an inlet-slot I for the reception of coin. To prevent'the coin being removed from the receptacle through the slot I, said slot is preferably closed from the inside by an elastic plate J, which plate is secured at one end to the lower side of the cover G by screws or rivets K, whereby it is obvious that when a coin is inserted through the slot I the plate J will be thrown back by contact therewith until the coin is deposited, when said plate will be thrown to its closed position by its own elasticity.
K is a slot formed in the bottom of the receptacle, through which the coin is removed therefrom. The slot K is located directly above the rocker E, whereby said rocker when in place serves to close said slot while it obscures it from view, so that none but those knowing the location of the slot or aperture will be able to remove the coin.
The rockers are held in place by the screws L, which screws are removed when desirous to withdraw the coin from the receptacle. With a view of making the device more attractive the sides of the coin-receptacle are preferably provided with openings M, which are-closed by panes of glass N, through which the contents of the receptacle can be readily seen. The panes of glass are secured in place in the ordinary manner by tacks O or any adhesive substance.
To provide means for notifying the public of the special charity for which funds are solicited, one of the ends of the cradle is provided with a card-receptacle P, which is secured thereto in a conspicuous place and serves to temporarilytsupport such printed matter as it may be desirous to place therein.
It will of course be understood that to accomplish the object sought in using the device as a means of procuring voluntary contributlons for charitable purposesit becomes necessary to make the same as attractive and conspicuous as possible, and with this object in view it will be understood that by so constructing the receptacle that it will be caused to oscillate upon its rockers with a slight touch or when placed in a current of.
air, such as is produced by an electric fan or from an open door or window, it will have a tendency to attract attention, while the fact that the device is made in the form of a cradle will of itself greatly enhance its attractiveness to children, and thereby increase the demand therefor as acommercial article.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. In a toy cradle savings-bank, the combination with the sides, ends and bottom of a cradle; of a cover secured at its edges to said parts, at a distance from andparallel to said bottom; a discharge-aperture K located in said bottom; a removable rocker E located beneath said aperture K, and adapted, when in place, to close said aperture, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CORA OLEGG.
