IMPROVED PAINT-BRUSH.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, AMOS CUTTER, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Paint-Brush; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of'this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a sectional view of myimprovement.
Figure 2, a side view of the movable jaw. V
The object of my invention is to obtain a paint-brush -in which the bristles may be secured without the aid of glue, thus permitting them to be renewed by the user without throwing aside the handle, or a portion only to be taken out, and their place supplied with new ones, thereby savingmuch that would otherwise be useless, and adding much both to the economy and convenience'of the article. Y
I effect this as follows: The portion of the handle containing the bristles or hairs is divided in. the direc- I tion of its length, and one side furnished with a hinge. The handle, composed of brass or other metal, is shown in the drawing at a. b is the hinge. The two parts are held tightly together, when the bristles or hairs are 'in place, by a sliding ring or band, as at c. This is'pushed toward the joint 6 when the jaw is to be opened for the purpose of removing or adding to the bristles. Around the outer edge of the cylinder, at m m, are small shoulders, for the security of the bristles, and each portion of it is supplied with a thin'piece of metal, seen in fig. 2, at k, which completely closes the line of division between the parts. The hapdle,f, is provided with a female screw, which fits over a male screw on the cylinder (1.. To this handle is rigidly fastened a rod, g,
having at its lower extremity a conical head, its apex pointing downward. This rod admits of being withdrawn to a distance equal to its length. 5
The operationof my invention will be readily understood. The rodg being drawn up, and the sliding band pushed back, the, hinged side of the cylinderis opened, and as many bristles as may be required taken from the package and arranged round the mouth of the cylinder. The ring is then forced down, scouring them for the time. Then, by screwing on the handle fi the cone at the bottom of the rod g is pressedjnto the midst of the bristles, crowding them closely together, and causing them-to expand at loose end, effectually fastening, them in this position.
I do not claim inserting the fibres of a brush or broom between. a handle and a'hollcw head, so that the said fibres shall be spread by the insertion of a pointed handle, as shown in the patent of John H. Power, July '10, 1860, No. 29,099. Neither do I claim a clamp-swivel, a clamp-collarho ok, and thejaws of a broom-head, as
seen in patent of J. S. El kins, April 17, 1866, No. 53,962, The construction and operation of my brush is difi'erent from either of these. I I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The screw-rod y, when permanently secured on the handle, and forced downwardly by the female screw in the handle-f, in connection with the cylinder 12, as and for the purposes described.
