L. J. MUELLER. WALL REGISTER. APPLICATION FILED MAR.18. 1903..
N0 MODEL.
Patented December 8, 1903.
PATENT OFF CE.
LOUIS J. MUELLER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
WALL-REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 746,355, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed March 18 1903. Serial No. 148,344:- (No modelJ To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs J. MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates particularly to that class of registers which are designed to be set in vertical wallsand which are provided with single valves ordampers. Its main object is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of registers of this class.
It consists in certain novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wall-register, with a part broken away, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1, showing the damper operating and holding piece.
a designates the register-frame, which may be of any desired pattern. It is provided with a front grille or grating b, which may be cast with said frame or made separately and rigidly secured therein in any suitable manner.
This grating is preferably curved or inclined outwardly toward the bottom, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a more convenient foot-rest.
c is a valve or damper, which may be conveniently made of sheet metal. It is horizontally hinged at its upper edge in the frame a on a rod (1 or in any other convenient way. The frame ais formed on the back side around the opening therein with a recess or rabbet, into which the valve 0 fits when closed.
. e is an operating and holding piece attached to the valve or damper c. It preferably consists of a wire-spring loop secured at its ends in said valve or damper centrally near its hinge connection with the frame and curved outwardly and upwardly therefrom. At its outer looped end it is hooked or bent into a handle or toe piece to facilitate opening and closing the valve with the foot. This loop passes outwardly between and binds-at its sides against parallel bars or friction-bearings ff with sufficient force to hold the valve or damper in any position to which it may be adjusted. These friction-bearings may be formed with the frame a and grating 19 or attached to either or both of said parts. To increase the elasticity or flexibility of the operating and holding loop 6, one of its ends may be allowed lateral play in the valve 0, the other end being rigidly secured therein by riveting or otherwise.
It will be observed that the loop e does not project sufficiently from theregister-frame in any position of the valve to be in the way or objectionable, while it affords an extremely "simple, eifective, and convenient device for opening, closing, and adjusting the valve or damper and also for holding it securely in any desired position.
Various changes in the minor details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the principle and intended scope of the invention.
1. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame provided adjacent to one edge with a bearing, and avalve or damper hinged at one end adjacent to said bearing in said frame and provided with an operating-piece which binds against said bearing with sufiicient force to. hold said valve or damper in adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame provided with a friction-hearing, a valve or damper hinged at one end in said frame and provided with a spring operating-piece rigidly attached thereto at its hinged end and binding against said bearing, substantially as described.
3. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame having opposing friction-bearings, and a valve or damper hinged in said frame and provided with an operating-piece consisting of a spring-loop attached to said valve or damper and binding against said bearings, substantially asdescribed.
4. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame provided with opposing parallel friction-bearings, and a valve or damper hinged in said frame and having attached thereto a curved spring-loop which passes between and binds against said bearings, substantially as described.
5. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame provided with a front grating h aving parallel vertical friction-bearings, and a valve or damper horizontally hinged in the upper part of said frame and having attached thereto a spring operating and holding loop which passes between and binds against said bearings, substantially as described.
6. In a wall-register the combination of a suitable frame provided with a front grating having near the top vertical friction-bearin gs, and a valve or damper horizontally hinged in the upper part of said frame and provided LOUIS J. MUELLER.
