To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD HEWITT, of the city of Brandon, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to hot air registers, especially to that type which are insertedin the wall rather than in the floor of a room.
The object of the invention is to provide a register the damper .or vane of which is adapted to have a swinging motion around a pivotal point or a lateral motion within the flue adjoining the register so that a more even distribution of hot air can be had between the lower and higher rooms of a building.
My invention consists essentially in a frame having the usual ornamental grill, opposing supporting plates secured to the frame, a swinging crank rod or shaft car ried by the plates, a damper or vane pivotally secured to the rod, means designed to engage with the upper edge of the damper, and means for operating the rod, the parts being arranged and constructed as herein after more particularly described.
' Figure 1 is a front elevation of a form of register embodying my invention and secured in position in the wall. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the register, the section being taken in the plane denoted by the line X X, and looking in the direction of the arrow 0;. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View through the register, the section being taken in the plane denoted by the line X X, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow 6. Fig. 4 is a rear View of the register detached from the wall. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view corresponding to that shown in Fig. 3, the damper or vans appearing in a second position. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view corresponding to that shown in Fig. 3, the vane or damper being shown in a thirdv position.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.-
1 represents the wall of a room which has the usual opening 2 therein which communicates between the air flue 3 and the interior of the room. The opening 2 is bounded by the usual wooden frame 4.

9 and 10' are plates or lugs secured firmly to the register frame by rivets 11, said I plates being directly opposite and located toward the lower edge of the frame and at the interior side thereof.
12 is a crank rod having the cross or body portion thereof appearing at 13, the two extending ends 13 passing downwardly to the inner sides of the plates 9 and 10, respectively, where they are pivotally received, thereby allowing the rod to swing centered on bearings formed in the plates. tremity 13 of one of the ends 13 is continued downwardly at the outer side of the plate 10 and is hooked, for a purpose later apparent.
1 1 is a damper or vane adapted to completely close the openings of the grill so that air is prevented from passing'into the room when the damper is closed. The damper is pivotally suspended on the cross or body portion of the rod by straps 15, the straps being attached to the damper somewhat below the upper edge thereof. The upper edge of the damper is hooked backwardly on itself at 16.
17 is a swivel secured centrally to the register frame at the top and having secured to its inner end a hooked bar 18 which is adapted'in certain positions of the swivel to engage with the upper edge of the damper.
19 is a bell crank pivotally secured at 20 to the inner side of the plate 10, said bell crank having one arm thereof projecting at the side of the grill and appearing within the room where it is provided with a knob 21. The arm above referred to is provided with teeth which are adapted to pass within notches 22 located in the side of the grill. In this way it is possible to set the bell crank in several positions.
23 is a link pivotally secured tothe downwardly extending arm of the bell crank at 24 and having its other end connected with the hooked extremity 13 of the rod 12. The link 23 is provided with a series of openings 23 whereby it can be adjusted.
Although I have shown the upper edge of the damper hooked backwardly on itself it will be understood that a hooked plate could be secured to the damper to fulfil the same The ex- 1 conditions as the hooked edge supplied, and
- it'is further to be understood that any convenient way of holding the bell crank in the desired position may be used, as the particular manner in which this is done forms no part of my invention.
If it is desired to close the register and allow the hot air to pass upwardly in the fine 3, in the direction indicated by the arrow hind the hooked upper edge of the damper.
If the knob 21 be then forced upwardly the damper is caused to swing upwardly and backwardly within the flue, the limiting position being shown in Fig. 5. In this instance it will be seen that the damper swings '7 the flue equally distributed to the lower and on the hooked swivel. This position of the damper will prevent warm air from passing [upwardly within the flue.
If it be desired to'have the hot air Within upper rooms one turns the swivel 17 so as to throw it from behind the hooked upper edge of the damper and then raises the knob to its upper limiting position. This causes the damper to assume the position shown in Fig. 6. The damper in this position in no way affects the circulation of air.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a register, the combination with a frame, a pivotally supported crank rod carried by the frame, a damper pivotally'suspended from the crank rod, meansfor bodily displacing the damper, and means engageable with the upper edge of the damper when the damper is brought to closed position.
2. In a register, the combination with a frame, of a pivotally supported crank rod carried by the frame, a damper pivotally suspended from the crank rod, means for swinging the crank rod on its pivotal points to bodily displace the'damper, and means designed to engage with the upper edge of the damper when in its closed position.
3. In a register, the combination with the frame, of a'pivotally'supported damper carried by the frame, means for bodily displacing the damper, and means engageable with the :damper and designed to convert the said movement into aswinging movement around per, means for bodily displacing the damper,
and means carried by the frame and en gageable with the damper whereby the said movement is converted into. a swinging movement around such engaging means, as and for the purpose specified.
.5. In a register, the combination with a suitable frame, of opposingplates carried by the frame, a crank rod mountediin bearings formed in the plates, a damper pivotally suspended from the crank rod, means for swinging the crankrod, and swiveled means secured to the frame and engageable with the upper edge of the damper when the damper is in the closed the purpose specified. i K

In a register,.the combination with a frame having a suitable opening thereinreceiving a grill, of a set of opposing plates secured to the'frame and toward'the lower side thereof, a crank rod pivotally mounted in bearings carried by the plate, said rod' having one ofits ends extending beyond the adjoining plate and with the extremity hooked, a bell crank pivotally secured to said latter plate, a link secured to the bell crank'and adjustable to'the hooked extrem ity of the rod, a damper pivotallysuspended from the cross rod' and having a hook formed at its upper edge, and a hooked swivel carried: by the frame and adapted to engage with the hook aforesaid formed on the damper when the damper is brought to the closed position.
