E. 0.- CONNORS.
GAR VENTILATOR. No. 253,188. Patented Feb; 7,1882.
NTTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
EDWARD O. CONNORS, OF LORAIN, OHIO.
CAR-VENTI LATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part `of Letters Patent No. 253,188, dated February 7, 1882. Application filed July 14, 1881. l(No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD 0. GoNNoRs,
of Lorain, in the county of Lorain and StateA of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
The nature and objects ot myinventiou will fully appear from the snbjoined description, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is an end View. Fig. 3 is a perspective view with a portion broken away to show form and application of slats.
A A are two trumpet-shaped tubes, having theirmouthsopeninoppositedirections. Their lower ends are united and open in one common throat leading into the interior of the car through the roof or otherwise. At the junction of said tubes A A, at the throat, is attached by an easyhinge-joint a swinging valve, B, which will be affected by the currents of air and swing back thereby, so as to open the throaton thesidefromwhencethecurrentcomes and close the opposite. The mouths ot the tubes A A have flaring flanges a a, designed to catch and concentrate the air, and are provided with horizontal slanting slats O O, having their upper edges curved outward, the object being to arrest the ingress of cinder and the like. There is also stretched across the mouths of said tubes, back of said slats, a wire screen, D, designed to prevent the ingress of finer particles of dirt, Src.
This device is simple and efcient in its construction and working. It may he attached to the roof or at the side of the dome of a car, as may be desired.
Having described my invention, l claim as follows:
The herein-described ven til-,|tor, consisting of the curved trumpet-shaped tubes A A, having open Haring mouths provided with horizontal diagonal slats O C, and wire screen D, said tubes united in a common throat having a swinging valve, B, as shown and described.
` EDWARD O. OONNORS.
