WILLIAM B. BROWN, 01? WHEAT RIDGE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,650, dated June 17, 1879; application filed March 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BAKER BROWN, of Wheat Ridge, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is avertical section of my improved ventilator, taken through the line w as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partly in section, to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for removing vapors, foul air, &c., from kitchens, school-rooms, and other places, which shall be simple inconstruction and efiective in use.
The invention consists in an improved ventilator formed by the combination of the hood, the pipe, the slat dampers, the connectingrod, the two cords, and the swivelcd tapering spiral with each other, to adapt the device to be applied to the ceiling of a room, as hereinafter fully described. j
A represents a hood, which is designed to be secured in an opening in the ceiling of the room to be ventilated. The lower part of the hood is made with vertical sides, and the upper part with inwardly-inclined sides.
From the top of the hood A a pipe, B, leads into a stove-pipe, a ventilating-flue, a chimneyflue, or outthrough the wall or roof.
In the lower part of the hood A is placed a number of slat-dampers, G, which are pivoted at the lower corners, of their ends to the lower part of the opposite sides of the hood A. The slat dampers G are connected at the middle parts of their upper or free side edges by a rod or bar, D. To one end of the rod D is attached the end of a cord, E, which hangs down in such a position that it maybe readily reached and operated by, a person from floor of the room. To the other end of the rod D is attached the end of a'cord, F, which passes throughra hole in the hood A or around a guide-pulley, and hangs down in such a position that it may be readily reached and operated by a person from the floor.
With this construction, by drawing upon the cord E the slats G will be turned down into a horizontal position, closing the lower end of the hood A, and by drawing upon the cord F the slats G will be raised into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, opening the lower end of the hood A.
To rods attached to the upper part of the hood A is swiveled the end of a flat bar, G, coiled into a tapering or conical spiral, which is revolved rapidly by the ascending current of air, and tends to accelerate the upward movement of the said current.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved ventilator formed by the combination of the hood A, the pipe B, the slat-dampers (J, the connecting-rod D, the two cords E F, and the swiveled tapering spiral G with each other, to adapt the device to be applied to the ceiling of a room, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM BAKER BROWN.
