VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 19, 1908. Serial No.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909. 439,389.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIs D. PRATT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Red Oak, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilators, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a ventilator for the foundation walls of houses which can be readily adjusted to permit a free circulation of air under the floor of the house in the summer time or whenever desirable and which can be quickly adjusted for closing off the air in the winter time or when damp weather renders it undesirable to open the ventilator to the weather.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ventilator of sim le construction which will effectually exclude rats, mice and other small animals from underneath the house and at the same time to permit perfect ventilation.
These and other objects may be attained by means of t e construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my ventilator adjusted for the purpose of admitting air under the lower floor. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the ventilator adjusted to close all communication between the outer air and the space under the lower floor. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the ventilator adjusted as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the ventilator adjusted as shown in Fi 2.
Iteferring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the casing which is preferably rectangular and elongated, as shown in Figs. 1'
and 2, and provided with a suitable flange 2 to overlap the opening cut in the foundation Wall of the house. Placed within the casing at a oint near the longitudinal center is an angu ar ventilator, one wall of which consists of the slatted member 3 provided with air openings 4. This member extends from side to side and from bottom to top of the casing 1. Arranged at right angles to the ventilator member is a plain cover or closure 5, and connecting the portions 3 and 5 at opposite corners are the triangular braces 6. The pivot rod 7 on which the ventilator is hinged extends through the corner braces 6 and into the casing 1.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: When it is required to ventilate the space between the lower floor and the ground, the slatted ventilating member is turned upon the rod 7 to the position shown in Fig. 3, and when it is required to close the air opening against the weather the member 5 is brought into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 4.
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that a ventilator made in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, and can be quickly adjusted for various kinds of weather and can be manufactured and installed at a low cost.
I olaimz- The herein described ventilator comprising a rectangular casing having an opening therethrough, a ventilator member and a closure member arranged at right angles one to the other, said ventilator member comprising a slatted structure and the two members being integral, triangular corner braces connecting the two members, and a pivot rod extending through said corner braces and into said casing, whereby either the ventilator member or the closure member may be brought into position for use, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS D. PRATT.
