PATENT nron.
FRANKLIN MANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 745,210, dated November 24, 1 903. Application filed September 18,1903. Serial No. 173.741. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Books or Files; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in 'a pocket-book or expansible file for the reception of valuable documents, the object being to provide a device of this character which is compact, is provided with rem ovable pockets, and is generally efficient; and
- it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my pocket book or file, showing same open preparatory to the insertion or removal of a pocket or of the removal of documents therefrom. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail section, on an enlarged scale, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing my device folded and secured. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 3, showing my device expanded, as when the pockets are filled or a greater number of pockets are added.
My said pocket book and file is designed particularly for the use of persons who are accustomed to carry a number of valuable documents-as, for instance, insurance agents, brokers, messengers, &c.to enable such documents to be carried in a compact form and to be secured against loss or the confusion usually resulting from carrying such documents loosely in the pockets and occasioning errors and loss of time.
To this end my device consists of a flexible member A, which may be termed a wrapper, and is made, preferably, of a soft flexible leather. Said member A is practically oblong in shape, one of the short edges, as B, being rounded to enhance its appearance. In size said member A is of slightly greater width than the length of the pockets 0 to be removably secured therein, and its length is about three times the depth of said pockets 0.. At two points D adjacent the long edges of said member A and a distance from the short edge E practically equal to the depth of the pocket 0 two cords F are secured at one end to said member Ain any suitable intended to be contained in said member A,
I secure two eyelets H in such a manner that the same are free to swing, and inwardly of said eyelets H, I mount two spiral wire or similar metal clutches I, which serve as friction-c1asps to engage and hold the free end portions of the cords F.
The pockets C, which consist, preferably,
of envelops of suitably tough stock, are provided at their lower corners with perforations J, lined with metal eyelets, through which the cords Fare passed prior to being passed through the said eyelets H and are then passed through the latter, are inserted in said clasps I, and thereby secured, the said pockets or envelops being thereby firmly secured to said member A. The free portion of said member. A is then turned to inclose said pockets or envelops, the edge B overlapping the edge E thereof. To the middle of said edge B, I secure one end of a cord K, having its free end similarly inclosed in a metal point L, and on the outer side of said member A, practically midway between the points D, I provide a friction-clasp M, similar to the clasps I, to receive the free end of the said cord K to draw said memberA closely around its contents and hold the entire device compactly together.
I claim as my invention 1. In a pocket book or file, the combination with a flexible wrapper provided on its inner face between its ends and adjacent its side edges with cords secured at one end thereto, eyelets pivotally secured to said incords adapted to be secured by the latter, the
Too
free ends of said cords being adapted to be passed through said eyelets and secured by said friction-elasps, the ends of said Wrapper being adapted to be overlapped to closely embrace said pockets.
2. In a pocket book or file, the combination with a flexible Wrapper provided on its inner face between its ends and adjacent its side edges with cords secured at one end thereto, eyelets pivotally secured to said innor face adjacent the points of fastening of said cords, and friction-clasps secured to said inner face of said wrapper inwardly of said eyelets, of a plurality of removable pockets provided with perforations to receive said cords adapted to be secured by the latter, the
FRANKLIN MANN.
