Description

UNITED STAT S Patented October 6, 1903.
PATE T OFFICE.
AROHIBALD TURVILL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAIR-CARPET FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,785, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed February 3,1903. fierial lilo. 141,633. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD TURVILL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia,State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stair-Carpet Fasteners,of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an improvement in stair-carpet fasteners wherein I provide means for the engagement of the carpet at the top and bottom of both sides of the riser, the device being quickly and easily placed in position and removed therefrom.
It further consists .of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of steps, showing the carpet thereon with the fasteners in position. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a stair-carpet fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view on line 00 .00, Fig.2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a stair-carpet fastener consisting of the two outwardly-flaring resilient arms B and C, said arms being formed of wire or other suitable material and having the points D D and E E, respectively, on each end thereof, it being seen that the said points extend in opposite directions from each other.
. are suitably secured together by any locking device, and in the drawings I have shown 'a' body portion F, having the threaded pin G projecting therefrom, which has a reduced neck H, in which is seated a washer J which holds the arms apart, a suit-able washer K engaging with the opposite side of the arms from that in which the body portion F engages, while a nut L holds thevarious parts in assembled position.
The operation will be readily seen. By pressing the arms together they can be placed beneath the ledge of one of the steps, and when released the points of one of said arms will engage with the carpet beneath said The said arms,
ledge and, if desired, enter the woodwork, while the points on theother arm will engage with the carpet on the step or tread thereof and may also engage with the woodwork.
It will thus be seen that the carpet will be held securely in position at substantially the edges of the same, while the upper and lower portions of the carpet will be held taut. It will also be seen that the fastener is of simple and inexpensive construction and admits of the formation of each arm of a single length.
It will be apparent that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A carpet-fastener consisting of a pair of arms, a connecting device therefor intermethereof, whereby the. same are held in position with respect to each other.
3. In a stair-carpet fastener, a pair of outwardly-flaring resilient arms, points extending therefrom in opposite directions, and means for holding said arms together consisting of a body portion engaging with one side of said arms, a washer on the other side of said arms, and means for holding the parts in assembled position.
