Description
No. 726,720. PATENTED APR. 28, 1903.
M. H. MALLORY.
GARMENT RETAINER. APPLICATION FILED 0( JT.11, 1902.
N0 MODEL.
I WITNESSES: I g
Y My t t A b .w- ATT0RNEY 'ATENT FFICE.
MARSHALL H. MALLORY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT,
GARM ENT- RETAINER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 726,720, dated April 28, 1903. Original application filed May 23, 1902, Serial Nor 108,643. Divided and this application filed October 11, 1902. Serial for collars, cuffs, and the like.
In my' application, Serial No. 108,643, filed May 23, 1902, of which the present application is a division, I have described a form of retainer consisting of a base and a long narrow substantially fiat plate mounted on the base,v providinga retainer which substantially fills a buttonhole and is held therein by friction. A retainer of that character, as well as the modification described in the present application, will hold the parts of the garment securely together without falling out and overcomes the objections incident to the use of the ordinary form of button having a round or narrow shank.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side view of my retainer; Fig. 2, an end view thereof; Fig. 3, an end view, and Figs. i and 5 side views, of other forms of the retainer. Fig. 6 is an endview,
of the form shownin Fig. '5; and Figs. 7, 8,
and 9 are side, end, and top views, respectively, of still another modification.
In my application above referred to the plate mounted upon the basehas a plain surface upon both sides thereof. In the present example of my invention I provide said plate with a projection intermediate the top and bottom of the plate, which projection is adapt ed to prevent the garment from rising over the top edge of the plate.
Referring to the drawings, a in all of the figures designates the base of the retainer, and b the plate mounted thereon. In Fig. 1 a rib or corrugation d is formedon the side of the plate and preferably near its upper portion, such rib or corrugation positively preventing the garment from rising over it. Fig. 3 shows two of such ribs or corrugations d, one on each side of the plate. These ribs are preferably beveled on each end to present smooth and tapering surfaces to the buttonhole. Fig. 4 shows a form in which a single (No model.)
boss or projection e isused in connection with a plate providedwith a hook c at one end, the
' with the under edge of the hook.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a form of the retainer in which a rib or corrugation d is used in connection with a plate having a hook similar to that shown in Fig. 4 at both ends of the plate, the rib being preferably on a line with the under edge of the hooks.
The projection, which is a feature of the present retainer, may be given the form shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9 by makingthe plate thicker at its central portion than it is at the ends, securing thereby inclined faces t t" on both sides of the plate, the central lines 0 0 constituting the projection, which performs the same function as the rib d or the boss e.
The bottom of the plate is preferably made shorter than the top, it resulting therefrom that the side edges of the plate are inclined upwardly from the base toward the top of the plate, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 7, such inclination tending to prevent the fabric from rising toward the top of the plate.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is-
1. A retainer fer collars, ends and the like consisting of a base and a long, narrow, substantially fiat plate mounted thereon, said plate being provided with a projection intermediate the top and bottom of the plate adapted to prevent the garment from rising over the same.
2. A retainer for collars, cuffs and the like consisting of a base and a long, narrow, substantially flat plate mounted thereon, said plate being of greater length at the top than at the bottom and provided with a projection intermediate the top and bottom of the plate adapted to prevent the garment from rising over the same. i I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARSHALL I-I. MALLORY.
