l PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL W. DRISCOLL AND WILLIAM DRAKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHADE OR CURTAIN HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 738,888., dated September 15, 1903. applicati@ tuen November 24, 1902. semi No. 132,701. (No 'modi-,1.)
To ir/ZZ whom i?? may concern:
Be it known that We, DANIEL W. DRISCOLL and WILLIAM DRAKE, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade or Curtain Holders, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved shade-roller holder and curtainsupport in which the shade-roller holder is longitudinally adjustable, so as to adapt the device to window-frames of different widths,
and in which the shade when rolled on the roller is concealed in a cylindrical casing, with which the curtain-support is connected.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification,P of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of our improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of lthe views, and in which- Figure 1 is a .front view of our improved shade-roller holder and curtain-support connected with a window-frame; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow ce, the curtain-support not being shown; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrow y; Fig. 4, an end view looking in the direction of the arrow ,z and showing a steadying device which we employ, and Fig. 5 a sectional front elevation thereof on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings forming part of this specification we have shown Ya window-frame, the sides of which are designated bythe reference character a and the top portion by the.
reference character d2, and secured to the sides a of the frame are the usual brackets d3 and a4, with which the end journals of the shade-roller are adapted to be connected in the usual manner, one of said brackets being provided with a central opening 0,5 and the A other with a vertically-arranged slot or opening a6, as is usual'in this class of devices. In the practice .of our invention we provide a shade-roller-holder comprising a tubular casing b, which is shorter than the shaderoller, and two end members b2, which are inserted into the opposite ends of the tubular l casing b and the outer ends of which are closed and the inner ends open, and the outer closed ends of the members b2 are each provided separately with an opening 2b, and within the tubular casing thus formed is placed the shade-roller c, on which the shade d is wound in the usual manner, it being understood that the shade-roller c is an ordinary spring-roller.
The tubular casing composed of the parts b and b2 is provided with a longitudinal slot 113, and the opposite sides of said slot, or that part .thereof which is formed in the members b2, are turned outwardly to form anges b4, and the slot h3 is shown in full lines in Figs.- 2 and 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 5, andthe object of the anges b4 is to form smooth surfaces, between which the shade d passes as it is wound on or drawn from the roller c and also to prevent the members b2 from lturning in the member b of the tubular casing.4
The members b2 of the tubular casing in which the roller c is placed are longitudinally adjustable, being held in part b' of said tubular casing by friction, and each of said members are preferably provided with an attachment e, through which a screw, bolt, or other fastening device e2 is passed, whereby said members are connected with the window-frame, so as to hold them steady and pre-V vent a lateral or turning movement thereof.
The journals a5 of the rollersc are in practice passed through the holes or openings 2b in the end members b2, as clearly shown, and are connected with the brackets a3 and a4 in the usual manner, andthe operation of raising and lowering the shade is thesame as that of other devices of this class. s
The curtain -support consists of a rodf, which is suspended from the tubular casing which incloses the roller c by means of hooks f2, two of which are shown, and these hooks are provided with segmental members f3, which are passed over the part b ofthe tubular casing andthe ends'of which are provided with inwardly-directed hooks f4, which engage the slot or opening lb3 in the part l) of the tubular casing, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and this prevents the hooks f2 from turning on said tubular casing, and said hooks project downwardly and forwardly and hold the rod f slightly in front of and below the IOO shade-roller holder, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the rodfis provided with the usual cnrtain-ringsff, with which in practice a curtain is connected in the usual manner. Ve also preferably provide ornamental attachments for the shade-roller holder, one of which is shown at g and consists of an ornamental plate having segmental spring-clamps g2, which are clasped onto the part b of the shade-roller, as shown in Fig. l. Any desired number of these attachments may be employed, and the same may be of any preferred form. As thus constructed it will be seen that the tubular shade-roller holder is composed of separate parts longitudinally adjustable, and by this means we adapt the device to window-frames of dierent widths, and our invention is not limited to the exact details herein shown and described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ashade-rollerholder comprisingatubular casing composed of a main part and two longitudinally-adjustable end members, said casing being provided at one side with a 1ongitudinal slot or opening and the end members being closed at the outer ends and provided with central openings, and spring-hooks connected with said casing for suspending a curtain-rod, said hooks heilig provided with gitudinal slot or opening and the end members being closed at their outer ends and provided with central openings, spring-hooks connected with said casing and provided with segmental members which partially inclose said casing and are provided at the ends thereof with inwardly-directed hook members which engage the slot or opening in said casing; and a curtain-rod supported by said hooks in front of said casing, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 18th day of November, 1902.
