CURTAIN-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Aug. 30, 1910.
Application filed July 15, 1909. Serial No. 507,733.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN G. Rosn and WALTER L. RHOADS, citizens of the United. States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Supports; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to shade-brackets that provide means for receiving the ends of shade-rollers and are adjustable toward and from each other so that shades of different lengths on different windows can be used, the adjustment being secured without the use of screws so that a tool, such as a screw-driver, is not necessary for adjusting the device.
The invention further consists in the provision of means for supporting curtain-poles so that curtains can be suspended inside and outside the shade.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective View of one of the brackets, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on line 3, 3, in Fig. 2 showing the position of the locking means when released and locked.
The device consists of end plates 10 which are preferably right-angled having holes 11 therein for securing it to a window-frame by means of nails or screws. Parallel bars 12 connect the end plates 10, although the bars can be replaced by any other structure forming a longitudinally slotted element. The parallel bars pass through the holes 13 in the bracket 14, which bracket has an opening 15 in its end, which opening is adapted to receive the end'of a shade-roller. The bracket 14 is bent into a right-angled portion 16 which fits up against the back of the bars 12, the barsbeing set out from the frame by reason of the right-angled end plates 10 forming a space between the frame and the bars 12. A rivet 17 passes through the right-angled portion 16 of the bracket 14, and the clamping lever 18 is secured by the rivet so as to be rotatable and to bear against the bars 12 when in locked position, which position is shown in Fig. 4, the clamping lever being bound tightly against the rods 12 and drawing the right-angled portion 16 of the bracket in tight frictional engagement with the bars. \Vhen the bracket is to be adjusted, the clamping lever 18 is swung around to the position shown in Fig. 3 so that its operating portion 19 is parallel with the space between the bars, and the clamping lever 18 does not fit tightly against the rods and allows the bracket to slide, since there is no cam action on the bars 12, the absence of which can be arrived at by turning up the edges of the lever 18 as shown in Fig. 3. This adjusting device permits the absence of screws or screwed parts in the sliding bracket, and there is no difiiculty in securing a quick and ready adjustment when different shades are to be put up at the same window or the bracket is changed to other windows. One of the end plates, which end is secured toward the other bracket, is recessed with a substantially semi-circular recess 20. This semi-circular recess portion is adapted to receive a rod which is preferably of the small metallic type which is adapted to holdthe curtain which would thus be suspended between the window and the shade. The rod is adapted to simply lie in the recess 20. When it is desired to furnish a bracket that is adapted to suspend a curtain outside of the shade,
that is, putting the shade between the curtain and the window, a rod 21 can be inserted in one of the holes 11 on the outside end plate of each bracket, this rod.21 having a right-angled portion 12 which is adapted to go through, the perforation that is supplied in the curtain rods of commerce so that the curtain rods can be set down over the pins formed by the right-angled portions 22 and thus act to suspend the curtain on them.
This device is simple and cheap and is readily adjusted on account of the absence of parts requiring the use of tools in adjusting them, since the locking lever 19 can .be worked by hand to release or lock it.
'Having thus described our invention, what we claim is l. A shade-roller bracket comprising end plates, each plate being formed with a rightangled portion for securing the bracket to a support, parallel rods connecting the end plates, a roller supporting bracket adapted to slide on the rods, and co-acting means on the bracket and the rods for locking the bracket in position, one of the end plates having a recessed portion on its top edge to receive a curtain rod.
2. A shade-roller bracket comprising end plates, each end plate being formed with a right-angled portion, the right-angled portion being perforated to permit the attachment of the device to a support, parallel strands adapted to form a slot between them, a roller supporting bracket having a rightangled portion on the back of the slotted portion between the strands, means for locking and unlocking the roller supporting bracket in its adjusted positions, and a pole supporting hook projecting from one of the end plates beyond the end of the roller supporting bracket, the other end plate being recessed on its top edge to receive a curtain pole.
3. A shade-roller bracket comprising end plates, each end plate being provided with a right angled portion whereby the device can be attached to a support, parallel rods or strands connecting the end plates, a roller supporting bracket having perforations therein to receive the strands and having a right-angled portion adapted to lie against one side of the strands, a rivet passing through the right-angled portion of the bracket and through the space between the strands, and a lever constructed to bind on the strands to lockthe roller supporting bracket when the lever is swung to one position and to release the bracket w'hen swung to another position. 1
In testimony, that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this 5th day of July 1909.
