BRACKET FOR WINDOW SHADES AND CURTAINS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,910, dated June 30, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELMER E. E. PINOKNEY, of West Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Vindow Shades and Curtains, of which the following is a full and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in brackets for supporting window-shades and curtain-poles, and the object of my invention is to provide a device that can be adjusted to window-casings of different widths and to window-shades of various widths, said brackets being adapted to carry a curtain-pole and to be adjusted to different angles when necessary.

In many cases the width of the Windows varies from the windows of other houses, so that a tenant who has provided windowshades to suit the windows of a house he has been occupyingfiuds, on removing to another dwelling, that his window shades or curtains are useless, and he is forced to purchase others. This condition frequently occurs among people who change their residence at short intervals and who carelessly break and destroy the window-casin gs by driving nails for securing the fixtures for the window-shades thereto, so that the woodwork is unsuited for holding another nail or screw for attaching other fixtures thereto. My invention is designed to 1;emedy these difficulties.

In the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a horizontal section at the line X X of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detached elevation of slide adapted to hold the spring end of a curtain-roller, and Fig. 5 a front elevation of a modified form of my device.

As represented in the drawings,-A designates a bracket-plate for holding my adjustable bracket. Said plate is preferably made with a concave groove 1 in its back, so as to adapt it to be secured to a beaded corner of a window-casing when occasion requires, and side wings 2 for bearing upon a plane surface. The plate A is provided with a sleeve 3 and with clamping-jaws 4, provided with a binding-screw 5, by which said clamping-jaws can be drawn together to hold an adjustable Serial No. 583,519. rod 6, whose upper part passes through the sleeve 3, as shown in the drawings. B is an adjustable bar that is held on the rod 6 and is provided with clamping-jaws 7, formed on a sleeve 8, that is fitted. to receive the rod 6 and allow the latter to slide therein. The clamping-jaws 7 are provided with a bindingscrew 9, by which said jaws can be closely jammed upon the rod 6 to retain the bar at any required height on said rod and to any angular adjustment thereon.

C is an adjustable curtain-pole hanger provided with a hook 10, adapted to receive the curtain-pole. Said hanger is provided with a sleeve 11, that is fitted to slide on the rod '6, and it is also provided with clamping-jaws 12, having a bindin g-screw 13, by which said jaws can be tightly clamped on the rod 6 to hold the hanger C at any point to which it is adjusted.

D and E are adjustable lugs, which are fitted to slide on the bar B to receive the ends of a shade-roller. The lug D is provided with a journal-bearing 14, in which the journal on one end of the shade-roller will rotate, and when both ends of the shade-roller are provided with a journal each bar 13 of the pair of brackets required will be fitted with a lug D. The lug E is provided with a slotted opening 15, adapted to receive a stationary lug that is commonly fixed in one end of a Hartshorn shade-roller and is attached to the torsion-sprin g by which said shade-roller is rotated. Each lug, both D and E, is provided with a set-screw 16 for clamping the lug to the bar B when the lug is adjusted to its required position.

The modification shown in Fig. 5 only differs from the device previouslydescribed by dispensing with the clamping-jaws for the several parts named. In this modification the bracket-plate A is provided with a boss 17, in which a set-screw 18 is fitted to bear upon and clamp the adjustable rod 19 in the bracket-plate A. The adjustable bar 13 has a boss 20, in which a set-screw 21 is fitted to bear upon the rod 19 to retain said bar in its required position, both in respect to height and angularity, and the curtain-pole hanger C is provided with a boss 22, in which a setscrew 23 is fitted to screw down and tightly bind the hanger G to the rod 19.

My invention is used in the following manner: The bracket-plate, either A or A, can be fastened to either a flat or beaded corner of a Window-casing and the

6 or 19 attached thereto. If a flat portion that is not too much broken and is parallel to the face of the wall, it should be used by preference; but if such a flat is not available a beaded corner of the Window-casing may be utilized for attaching the bracket-plate thereto. The adjustable bar B or B is fixed on the rod above referred to and adjusted to a required height and parallel to the face of the Wall. The lugs D and E are next secured to the adjustable bar at such distance apart that will allow the Window-shade to be centralized with the Window-opening. If the Window-shade does not run true, by reason of the shaderoller being out of true, either one of the adjustable bars can be adjusted until the window shade runs true. The curtain -p0le hanger is fixed to its place ready to receive its curtain, and after the latter is fixed to its place the device is complete to perform its functions, which are too Well known to require description.

lVhen preferred, the curtain-pole hanger may be omitted and the device utilized for Window-shades alone.

'lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bracket for Window shades and curtains, the combination of a bracket-plate, a vertical rod securable in said plate, a crossbar fitted to slide and swing on said rod, lugs attachable to said cross-bar and provided with means-as describedfor holding a shade-roller, and a curtain-pole bracket attachable to said vertical rod, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination of a bracket-plate, a vertical rod on said bracket-plate, a cross-bar fitted to slide or swing on said rod, and adjustable lugs on said cross-bar provided with means-as describedfor retaining a revoluble shade-roller, as and for the purpose specified.
