PATENT OFFICE.
.DETACHABLE COLLAPSIBLE COUCH-FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,600, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed March 24, 1902. Serial No. 99,770. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMos SOHROCK, a citizen.
of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Collapsible Gouch-Frames; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. I
My invention relates to a frame for sofas, couches, and the like.
It consists of the parts and the constructions and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the couch and frame. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a portion of a perspective View. Fig. 4 shows the frame folded and collapsed. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail looking toward the inner angle of the parts 2 and A.
Sofas, couches, and like structures are usually made with wooden frames or bases, and the parts are permanently so united that there can be little reduction in the size for purposes of shipping.
It is the object of my invention to provide a couch with a separable iron frame and means by which the frame can be folded into a small compass when desired.
The upholstered portion of the couch C may have a wooden or other suitable frame, which The iron frame or base is formed of side bars A and end bars 2, which are made of angle-iron, connected together at their meeting angles and so fixed that the one side of the angle lies horizontal and the other turns upwardly around the exterior, thus forming a space within which the frame 0 of the couch is adapted toseat, and the upturned edges of the angle-iron keepit from being displaced.-
As herein shown, the end bars 2 of the frame are jointed and pivoted together near the center, as shown at 4, and the ends also being tnrnable where pivoted to the side frames A, as at 5, it will be manifest that when separated from the couch these end frames can be turned inwardly and the sides drawn close together.
B represents legs, which maybe made tubular and of metal, having casters upon the lower ends, and these legs are secured in the line of the pivot-points, about which the bars 2 are foldable and tnrnable with these bars. Braces 3 extend diagonally from the lower ends of the legs up to the end bars 2, to which they are bolted, and other braces 6 may extend from the legs toa point near the center of the side bars A, where they are adjustably fixed, as shown.
The parts may be clamped together by bolts and nuts, so that when extended they will be sufficiently rigid, and when they are to be collapsed the nuts may be loosened, so as to allow the parts to turn and fold, as previously described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination in a couch of an upholstered section, a separable angle-iron base composed of sides and jointed ends adapted to fold, said base having the outer side of the angle-pieces turned upwardly to form a support and guide within which the upper portion is adapted to rest, legs extending in line with the pivot-fastenings at the meeting angles of the frame, and inclined braces extending between the legs and frame.
2. A base for couches and the like consisting of angle-iron sides and ends, the outer sides of which are turned upwardly, means pivotally fastening the sides and ends, joints formed in the end sections whereby they are foldable to allow the sides to be brought together, legs extending in line with the pivotfastenings at the meeting angles of the frame and braces extending between the legs and the frame.
3. A couch consisting of an upper upholstered portion and a separable base, said base including angle-iron sides and ends 5' means pivotally securing said sides and ends; joints in the end sections whereby they are foldable to allow the sides to be brought together, porting-legs extending inline with the pivotsaid sides and ends forming a continuous fasteningsat the meetingangles of thefrarne. 1o rectangle having a horizontal flat rim adapted In witness whereof I have hereunto set my to form a continuous seat and holder upon hand.
which the upper portion is supported; and AMOS SCHROOK. an inclosing upturned peripheral portion by Witnesses: which the edge of said upper portion is in- S. H. NOURsE,
closed and maintained in place; said sup- JESSIE G. BRODIE.
