IMPROVEMENT N LAMPS.

Be it known that we, E. A. LOCKE and lV. N.- WEEDEN, botiiof Boston, in the countyvot` Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lamps; and we do hereby declare that t'he following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and forni part'of this specification, is a description of our invention sui'icient to enable those skilled in the art to practise it'.`

Our invention relates particularly to the construction of lamp-burners for kerosene-lamps, with reference to provision for removing the chimney from the lamp, andthe cone from direct proximity with the wicktube, for the purpose of trimming the wick. i

It is well known that it is very didicult to obtain access to aburning wick of such a lamp, though the wick often needs some slight trimming, after being lighted, to give thje flame a perfect shape, and to prevent it from impinging against the chimney; and though the chimney has been so'applied as to swing away from the cone, orto slide up therefrom, itis generally found to be more or less dicult to trim th'e`wick, not only on account of the presence of the chimney, but because the wick has to be fed up above the cone. l

In our invention we apply the chimney to a removable ring, which slides down over and is held upon the cone by friction, and we make the cone in two parts or halves, which close together-,and around' the wick-tube, to form theordinary cone, but which open or spread apart to give free access to the tube to trim the wick.

The burner-cone so made, and the removable chimney-holding ring for holding the halves of the burner in closed position, constitute the novel features of construction to be herein described'and claimed. i

The drawings representithe upper part of a lamp embodying these improvements, as also some other new details of construction,which will not ibe herein particularly referred to, as we intend to more fully describe them in another application or other applications to be made by us.

a denotes the top of the lamp-body; b, the wick-tube; e, the cone; d, the chimney. On each sideof the burner, in line with the wick-tube, is a projection orbearing, e, to which is jointed, by binge-pinsf, the cone e, made in halves, which close together and around the wick-tube, as seen at A, or turn down upon their hinges and expose the wick-tube, as seen at B, the top of the cone regulating the flame, as do the ordinary cones, but permitting the freest access to the wicktube and `its wick, when opened, as will be obvious from the drawings. The chimney-base er support y is `made as an independent detachable base, having an inwardly-projecting ring, t, which slips over and ts upon the sides of the cone, a lange, z', preferably projecting from-the ring, the better t0 support and steady it in vertical position, the ring holding the halves of the cone firmly togethen'but'readily slipping oil` from the cone (with the chimney) to allow the cone to be opened, `as seen at B, and as before set forth. As the outer part j of the chimney-base does not get so much heated by the flame as to prevent its being freely handled, the chimney is readily removed from the burning lamp, whenever it is desirable to trim the wick.

The wick is raised and lowered in the usual manner. Guides or ribs c may project from `the outer surfaces of I the cone, for the ring h to slide upon, and the chimney d may contract to the base g, and be held in place on the base by fingers l, projecting from the base against the inner Haring surface of the chimney; a swing-catch, m, actuated by a screw, n, being connected with the base to permit attachment of the chimney to and its removal from the base. i I

We claim a sectional lamp-cone, made to open and close, as and for the purpose substantially as set forth. We also claim a. removable chimney-supporting ring or base, holding the parts of the cone together, substantially as described.
