OIL-LAMP WITH ANNULAR BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,543, dated April 16, 1889.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR CAUTIUs, of Tilsit, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Lamps with Annular Burners, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention herein described has been patented to me elsewhere as follows: In Great Britain October 8, 1887, No. 18,664; France, October 17, 1887, No. 186,482, Belgium, October 18, 1887, No. 79,241, and Spain, May 5, 1888, No. 7,887.
This invention relates to that class of oillamps in which the oil burns in the interior of the annulus formed by the wick and burner, giving a ring i'lame.
The object of my invention is to provide an oil-tight joint between the oi1-reservoir and the burner, so that the oil cannot escape even when the lamp is upset. This I attain by means of the mechanism shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section ot' the improved `lamp reservoir and burner constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of adjusting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a section on line m oc of Fig. 2. Fig. is ahorizontal section of the plug or stopper for closing reservoir.

a is a central tube' rigidly connected with the oil-reservoir b, air being admitted to same by means of slots c.
d is the wick, which is pressed against the outer tube, e, by means of springs h, so as to move with it. Said tube has at`its extremity an internal flange, f, said ilange being bored to accurately iit the tube a.
By means of the mechanism hereinafter described the tube c is capable ot being moved up and down with reference to the tube a, thereby regulating the height of t-he burning portion of the wick, (shown at g.) lVhen the tube e is lowered to its fullest extent, the liange f tits over the end of the tube a, and thus eXtinguishes the flame.
The mechanism for raising and lowering the tube e consists ot' the tube t', which carries at its extremities screw-threads, one of which, k, serves to screw the burner into the reservoir, while the other, Z, supports the gallery. The tube e is capable of moving up and down in the tube t', and has attached to it two pins, n, taking into diametricallybp-n posite slots m in the tube Over this tube 'L is placed another short tube, o, fitted with an adjusting-disk, o', (shown in the drawings as forming a part of the tube 0,) the whole being capable of a mot-ion of rotation on the tube t', longitudinal motion being prevented by means ot' the cap q and disk p, forming a part of or secured to the tube t'. This tube is also provided with two diametrically-opposite slots, r, also engaging with the pins n. The slots r being oblique, on rotating the disk o' in one or other direction, the position of the pins n in the said slot is altered, and the tube c being moved up and down by the said pins the light is thus regulated or extinguished. The tube t is provided with a rim, s, made of thin metal, which bears against the tube e, forming atight joint between the tubestand e, preventing any leakage of oil should the lamp beupset. To allow of the reservoir being filled and to provide for the egress of air from the same when screwing in the burner, or to allow ingress of air as the oil is consumed, I provide a screw-cap, t, fitted with a Valve, fu, closed by meansot aspring, w, placed between the valve o and the bridge-piece To allow any compressed air to escape from the-reservoir, the valve vv is opened by pressing the stud y; but should a vacuum be produced in the reservoir, owing to consumption of oil by the llame, the valve c opens automatically and allows air to enter. Lamps constructed on this principle may be burned for some weeks without cleaning.
that I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is-
A lamp consisting of a central tube, a, the wick-tube e, provided with projecting pins, the tube t', encircling the tube e and slotted, as described, the tube o, having inclined slots engaging with the pins of the tube, the cap q and disk p, and the hand-disk o', for rotating the tube o, substantially as described.
