Description
l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMP-BURNER.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,459, dated February 10, 1880.
Application led October 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ORLANDO MERRILL, of Courtland, in the county of Lawrence and State of Alabama, have invented a new Improvement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
' Figure l is a sectional elevation of the lampburner.
, Fig. 3 is an enlargedv plan view, partly in secof hinged half-tubes and their operation g mechanism with the wick-tubes made with open edges, so that the wick-tubes may receive wider and narrower wicks.
The base-plate A of thc burner has its middle part raised andslotted to receiveV the wick-tube B.
Upon the outer part of the base-plate A are formed two cencentric seats, C D, to receive chimneys of di'erent sizes, which chimneys are held in place by springs E, attached to the hase-plate A in suchl positions as to rest n against the outer surface ofthe smaller chimney and against the inner surface of the larger chimney, so thata smaller chimney and anarrower wick may be used when less light is required, and a larger chimney and a wider wick may be used when more light is required, thus avoiding the necessity of having two lamps or two burners for the same lamp.
To the lower side of the middle part of the base-plate A is attached a collar, F, having a screw-thread formed upon it to screw into the collar of the lamp.
The part of the wick-tube B above thebaseplate A is made with open side edges, and is slightly tapered, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To the base-plate A, at the side edges of the wick-tube B, are hinged the lower ends of thel side edges of the two half-tubes G, which are Fig. 2 is a plan view' of the burner.A
tapered upon their inner edges, as shown in Fig. l, so that when the upperends of the half-tubes Gr are moved inward the said halftubes, in connection with the open-edged upper part of the wick-tube B, will form a narrow wick-tube. When the upper ends of the `half-tubes G are moved outward the said halftubes G, in connection with the open-edged upper part of the wick-tube B, form a wide wick-tube to receive a wide wick, so that differen t-sized wicks and dii'erent-sized chimneys may be used with the same burneryas more or less light is needed.
i Along the inner edges of the half-tubes Gr are formed grooves H, in which work pins l attached to a disk, J. The' dislI J is pivoted to a standard, K, attached to the base-plate A, and to the outer end of its pivot is attached a button, L, for convenience in operating it.
With this construction the half-tubes G may be adjusted to form a wider or a narrower wick-tube byturning the dislI J.
Any other suitable mechanism may be used for adjusting the half-tubes G as may be desired or convenient.
The wick-tube is covered with a cone, M, in the usual way. The wick is adjusted within the wick-tube by spur-wheels N, attached to a rod, O, in the usual way.-
Having thus described my Invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
l. In lamp-burners, the combination, with the wick-tube B, made with' open edges, of`
the half-tubes G, hinged at their lower ends, substantially as herein shown and described,
so that the completek wick-tube may be adjusted to receive wide or narrow wicks, as set forth.
2. In lamp-burners, the combination, with the hinged half-tubes G, of the grooves H,
lpins l, and disk J, substantially as herein shown and described, for adjusting the halftubes G to -form wider or narrower wicktubes, as set forth.
ORLANDO MERRILL.
