UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD SOUHEUR, on SERAING, BELGIUM.
IMPROVEMENT lN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,085, dated April 11, 1876 application filed January 15, 1876.
5 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD SQUHEUR, of Seraiug, Belgium, engineer, have invented certain Improvements in- Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates more especially to that class of lamps which are employed in mines and similar places, and which are usually termed safety-lamps; and the object of my invention is to so construct a lamp of this class as to prevent the access of the flame to the oil-reservoir, prevent leakage of the oil, to regulate the flame, and to render the fastening of the reservoir to the frame more secure.
This object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the vertical sectional viewin accompanying drawing, in which X represents the usual frame of the lamp; A, the glass; B, the conical chimney, and (J, the surrounding wire gauze. D is the oil-reservoir, closed at the top by the ring (I and wick-tube F, and over this ring and wick-tube fits snugly a cap, H, of polished metal. Surrounding the wick-tube F is a sleeve, G, to which is attached the rod g, passing through a tube in the oil-reservoir and controlled by a nut, g.
In a projection, J, at one side of the oilreservoir D, is arranged to slide a pin, I, under the control of a spring, 6, which tends to force the upper portion of this pin into an opening, 1', in the frame X, when the latter is screwed on the reservoir. The oil-reservoir D I fill with some absorbent material, through which the wick passes and which absorbs the oil.
The advantages of a lamp constructed in the-above manner are, first, the polished-metal cap H serves not only to prevent access of the flame to the oil-reservoir, but also serves as a reflector; secondly, the spongy material in the reservoir absorbingthe oil prevents the accidental leakage of the same, often caused by the motion of the lamp thirdly, the height of the flame can be regulated by the nut g on the outside of the reservoir through the medium of the sleeve 4G; and, fourthly, the spring-pin Irenders the fastening of the frame to the reservoir more secure.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the detachable wicktube F, with the reservoir D, screwring d,
and the cap or cover H, adapted to the said wick-tube and reservoir, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the wick-tube F and its sleeve G with the rod cg attached thereto, passing to the outside of the reservoir, and having a regulating-nut, 9, adapted to its threaded end, all as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'ot' two subscribing witnesses.
ARNOLD SOUHEUR,
Witnesses V. RIEBNYQK, J. O. OoNINeK.
