HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 734,399, dated uly 21, 1903.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALVIN I. BUTL R,a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Clifford, in the county of Traill and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will e11- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in horse-collars; and its object is to provide a strengthening device by means of which the collar will be strengthened and prevented from breaking at the bottom and the life of the same greatly prolonged.
A further object is to provide a device which may be adjusted to fit various sizes of horse-collars and which may be easily and quickly attached to and removed from the same.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a horse-collar, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of my improved strengthening device. Fig. 3 is a detail section through the bottom of the same, showing the means for adjusting the two spring-sections to suit different sizes of collars.
Referring to the drawings,the numeral 1 designates a horse-collar of any desired pattern and construction, and 2 myimproved strengthening device consisting of the two curved spring-sections 3 and 4, adjustably secured together at their lower ends and adapted to seat snugly upon the front rim or roll of the collar in the groove formed to receive the hames. The said sections 'oifer no obstructions to the placing of the hames and are held in position by the spring-clips 5, secured to the upper endsof the sections and engag ing or clamping the front rim or roll of the collar. The lower end of the section 4 is formed with two guide loops or hands 6 and 7, through which the end of the section 3 is adapted to slide in order to alter the length of the sections to allow it to fit collars of different sizes. The lower ends of these sections are held or locked in their adjusted position by the set-screw 8, passing through a threaded aperture in the loop 7 and impinging upon the end of the section 3 to hold the same.
It will be seen that by this construction my device may be quickly and easily applied tov collars of various sizes and makes without interfering with the hames and that it will greatly strengthen the collar and prolongits life by preventing the wear and breaking of the same at the bottom.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily unstood without requiring an extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope-of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. The combinationwith a horse-collar, of a strengthening device composed of two curved spring-sections, the lower end of one of said sections being provided with guide-loops to receive the lower end of the other of said sec tions, means for locking the lower ends of said sections together, and spring-clips carried by said sections for the purpose of;se-
curing the same to said collar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a horse-collar, of a strengthening device composed of spring-sections fitting in the hame-groove of the collar, said sections being adjustably connected at their lower ends and provided at their upper ends with integral spring clips clasping the rim or roll of the collar, substantially as described.
