Description
Mwst ena-Mw- S'. D. BING'HAM, OE'MAUMEE CITY, OI-I-I-O. Lehm Patent No. 85,784, dated .mmm/ ry 12, 1869.
:MPRovnn HARNESS COCK-EYE.
HH-. vThe Schedule referred to in' these LettersrPatent and making paxtof the name.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, S. D. BING'HAM, ot' Maumee City, in the county of Lucas, vand State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Harness Cock-Eye; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication.
Y Figure 1 is a side view of my improvedcock-eye.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line :v z, fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved harness cock-eye, simple in construction, durable, easily adjusted, and which 'will diminish the cost of the construction of the harness very materially; and
It consists in the cock-eye, constructed as hereinafter more fullydescribed.
A is the case or plate of the cockeye, to the rear end of which is attached, or,upo it is formed, the eye or loop a, by means of which it is attached to the The plate Ais made a little wider than thetrace B, and upon its side edges are formed flanges a2, a little deeper than the-thickness of the said trace B.
The edges of the flanges a2, at the forward end'of the case A, are connected by a bar, a3, attached to or formed solid with the said plate and anges, thus forming a rectangular loop or keeper for the reception of the trace B.
O is a hook or catch, the shank of which is inserted between the .plies of the trace, where it is securely riveted in place.
Upon the rear end of this shank is formed a straight hook, pivot, or projection, which passes through one or the other of the holes through the plate or oase A, so that the length of the trace may be adjusted as required. v
D is a` rectangular loop sliding upon the oase A, and which, when the hook has been. adjusted in place, is slipped back, so as to rest against the projecting end of the hook 0, which prevents it from slipping back too far, while the pressure and Working of the trace prevent it from working forward, thus preventing the hook C from getting out of place.
This construction, by enabling the length of the trace to be conveniently adjusted at the cock-eye, does away with all necessity for trace-buckles and harnestugs, and enables the forward end of the trace B to be riveted directly to the hames or to the hames-eye.
This construction also prevents the weakening of the traces by the formation of holes for the reception of the tongues of the trace-buckles.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and .desire to' secure by Letters Patent- An improved harness cook-eye, formed by the combination of the plate or case Aat1 a a3, hook (l, and sliding loop D, with each other, said parts-being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: 'S. D. BIN GHAM.
ANDREW HENFLDTG, LUTHER MYERS.
