ROUGH BOX FOR BURIAL-CASKETS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,196, dated. July 21, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK D. SKAHEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rough Boxes for Burial-Caskets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to rough boxes for inclosing burial-caskets, and is designed more particularly for thespecies of rough boxes which are formed of sheet iron or steel.

The object of my present invention is to muffle or deaden the sound incident to the dropping of the grave-closing material onto the lid of the rough box in the operation of burying the rough box; and to that end the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a side view of a rough box embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section on line X X in Fig. 1.

with its walls continuous from the bottom to the top of the box. The tops of these walls are formed with outwardly-projecting flanges a ct, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. C denotes the lid of said box, which lid is also formed of sheet-metal, preferably boiler iron or steel, and is made large enough to overlap the flanges a. The edges of said lid are bent down to form depending flanges b, which abut against the edges of the flanges a, and thus prevent lateral movement of the lid when seated upon the box.

0 represents a gasket or suitable packing interposed between the flanges ct and overlying margins of the lid.

The aforesaid construction of the body of the rough box and its lid is similar to that shown in my Patent No. 709,423, dated September 16, 1902. There is, however, some objection to the use of metallic rough boxes,

. especially when the metallic walls thereof extend from the bottom continuous to the top of the box, owing to the disagreeable sound incident to the vibrations of the lid and walls of the box produced by the'dropping of earth onto the metallic lid in the'operation of closing the grave. To overcome this objection, I provide the said lid with suitable means for muffling or deadening the aforesaid sound, for which purpose I prefer a board d, of suitable wood or other fibrous material, which board I fasten to the under side of the lid by means of bolts (2 e or rivets or other suitable means. Aside from the aforesaid muffling effect the board (1 when securely bolted to the lid also serves to brace the lid to prevent its springing and buckling, and by making the board of proper length and width to abut with its edges against the inner sides of the box the top portion of the box becomes braced to prevent inward deflection thereof, and at the same time the gasket 0 is retained on its seat between the flanges b of the lid and edges of the board.

The box A is provided with suitable handles, 11, by which to carry the box. The lid (J is also provided with handles 3', suitably shaped to adord convenient means for lifting the lid from the box when desired.

To provide convenient and efficient means for fastening the lid to the body A without piercing and injuring the gasket 0, I employ cam-levers f, which are pivotally connected to brackets g, attached to the metallic lid 0 and formed with depending portions extending beneath the lid-flanges b and terminating in ears, to which the levers fare pivoted, as shown at h. Said levers are shaped so that when they are in position for locking the lid 0 on the body A the main portion or manipulative ends of said levers bear on the side of the box A, while the cam portions Z bear on the under side of the flanges a and adjacent portions of the side of the box or body A, which serves to retain the levers in their locking position.

In removing the lid from the box the depending portions of the brackets yield sufficiently outward to the necessary force applied to the lovers to throws them out of their aforesaid engagement.
